Gran Masa are a heavy hitting, avant garde quartet based in Madrid who play fresh and energetic music heavily influenced by the Downtown sound and ethos with a strong focus on improvisation.
Gran Masa recorded this their debut self titled album over two very hot days in an even hotter studio in Madrid in August of 2012. The material on the album explores the whole range of blasting aggression through to delicate ballads, intricate composition and free improvisation.
Below is a little information about the musicians that make up Gran Masa;
Álvaro Domene (guitar) is a guitarist and composer interested in the intersection of various styles of composed and improvised music. He's been part of Madrid's jazz and improvised music scene since moving back from London in 2011. He has studied with Stuart Hall, Chris Batchelor, John Stowell and Jonathan Kreisberg. He currently co-leads Öpik-3 with Álvaro Pérez, a firey avant-jazz trio making waves on the Spanish jazz circuit who will be releasing their debut album this summer. He's also active as an educator in the Madrid area.
Álvaro Pérez (alto saxophone) studied classical saxophone at Vitoria Conservatory and contemporary classical music at Bordeaux Conservatory in France. Since his arrival in Madrid in 2004, he's been very active in Madrid's jazz and improvised music scene. He has performed with Walter Beltrami Quartet, George Garzone, Jorge Pardo, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and currently co-leads Öpik-3.
Michael Caratti (drums) was for many years heavily involved in the London improvised music scene before recently returning temporarily to his homeland Australia where he is currently scoring films and playing drums and laptop around the country including for experimental noise group Original Past Life. He has played with Steve Beresford, Alex Ward and Richard Turner.
Sergio Mena (electric basses) has played in countless musical outfits throughout his career in styles ranging from metal to flamenco. Based in Madrid, he works as a composer, arranger and orchestrator for numerous bands and artists. He also co-leads, with Álvaro Domene, the experimental project Sons of Huskies. He has performed in France, Spain, Poland and England. Sergio also writes comic books and theatre plays.
