"Crazy Like An Ambush" by Grey Revell is a wonderfully experimental Freak-Folk voyage.
The opening track (entitled:"Getaway Car") starts out with live sounds and a chaotic production. Things stay experimental and wild up until the fourth track (entitled: "Anna Lee (Dressed In New Lightning)") which is a soft acoustic ballad. Ahead of it's time, Grey offers reverb doused melody behind his acoustic strumming, a sound that will be used extensively in the Indie music of the following decade.
Some songs have psychedelic elements to them, some seem to stem from only roots and nihilistic lyrics ( a pretty good Antifolk). The overall sound of the album can be scattered, but through this seeming randomness the record finds strength in dynamic.
Lyrics repeat dark phrases, they shout in contempt in the background of productions, they offer insights and confess.
"Crazy Like An Ambush" is a raw and spirited masterpiece by Grey Revell.
