El Grupo Esencia se origina en le barrio la Cuarta en Ponce en 1997 comprometidos con promover y acrecentar la cultura puertorriqueña. Mantenemos profundos valores musicales de lo que fué la base de nuestro género (Ismael Rivera, Rafael Cortijo, Mon Rivera, Rafael Cepeda) mientras intercalan variedad de innovaciones que representan lo que es el presente y el futuro de la música afro-boricua.

The Esencia Group, one of the most exciting plena ensembles today, originated in the neighborhood of La Cuarta in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1997. Committed to promoting and improving Puerto Rican culture, they keep alive the musical values of the original masters of the plena genre (Ismael Rivera, Rafael Cortijo, Mon Rivera, Rafael Cepeda) while intermixing a variety of innovations that represent what is the present and future of Afro-Boricua music.
