At any given moment, half of the world's population dwells in darkness, while the other half are bathed in light. Metaphorically speaking, the band Half the World counts themselves among the latter. At the crux of their huge sound, Half the World conjures a magnetic alchemy of vision and promise: crushingly heavy and sublimely melodic.

It's also the framework to support eloquent, cerebral lyrics. "There's a real strong sense of responsibility of writing music with this band, especially from a lyrical standpoint," they confirm. "We shoot for substance. We're not on some kind of crusade, but you won't hear 'Oh baby' or any love songs. We don't need to add to that." Each musician in the band is also a songwriter. "You may hear dark themes, but no promotion of darkness," they promise.
"What we're awake to is a new vibe, a new revolution. "

Hailing from Holland, lead singer Mary Magill -- with her striking visual presence and commanding, world-class voice -- is the band's on-stage focal point. The rhythm section is comprised of Mat Hansen on bass and Pete Weaver on drums and backup vocals (Pete also produces and engineers for the band). Jim McCrostie and Brett Pedersen's incandescent, razor-edged guitars generate the fire that electrifies this monumental wall of sound.

Still, in the band's hometown of Boise, Idaho, there is no equivalent Sunset Strip amidst the pines. "You struggle to get a gig at all," they confirm. But they've gotten airplay on over 112 college radio stations in the US and Canada, performed 6 shows during Austin's South by Southwest confernce in 2004, opened for Third Eye Blind and expanded their affirmative sound into arena-size proportions. The band has also parlayed their relative isolation into a winning card; signing a licensing deal with Now and Then Records to distribute and promote the album throughout the UK and Europe. Half the World has achieved digital visibility via garageband.com. They've been tapped by the staff as alternative rock picks, had 4 songs featured in the top ten for hard rock and turned those kudos into an expanding global audience.

While the band takes its next giant steps -- expanding their touring base, and divining a suitable label partner -- they continue to generate a lasting momentum fueled by positivity, imagination and a shared destiny. Half the World are determined to spread their sound over all the world.

Damn good band! Just in time!
I really like "Here and Now" and "Trance". Tuneful poprock with a metal edge. Kind of reminds me of Concrete Blonde and King's X. Made for the stage!

Amazing, solid performance all around ! 5 out of 5 Stars!
5{From the cover to the last song, everything was pro! It's rare you find an indie band with an effort as solid as this. I would expect big things from an album this strong. It is now my mission to spread the word on this band far and wide!

First heard the band on rock-n-radio, then I went searchin for the cd. well worth it, great band. Can see them getting bigger in the upcoming year or so.

It's like The Start, except less whiny and more meaningful. And, well, generally better, too. Absolutely awesome.

This is good stuff!
Good CD with strong female vocals & crunchy licks here & there. Contrary to other reviews, this really has no resemblence to Evanescence or Godsmack. Rather, I would compare it strongly to Joydrop's music or Lennon (Lennon Murphy that is). Good mix of songs... hard, soft, & in between - I highly recommend.
