ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Hal Roland is a native of the culturally rich area of Miami, influenced by rhythms of Latin America, as well as progressive jazz, rock, and pop. This album follows the tradition of jazz artists putting their influence on songs of Broadway and standards, and takes it to the next step of using current songs as a backdrop for vocal and creative instrumental improvisations and "Conversions". While some selections push the envelope more than others, the listener is constantly and pleasantly surprised by the spontaneous twists and turns that the music will take at any moment! The instrumental configuration is a traditional jazz quartet, featuring piano, upright bass, sax, and drums, but puts a very modern approach to voicings and harmony, making some well known songs sound very fresh and knew.

Respectful jazzy reinvention of some classic popular songs
Check out this new CD called "Conversions" Why? Hal Roland and his quartet "Brothers in Time" take 11 classic songs by Bill Withers, Sting, Christopher Cross, Barry Gibb, Stevie Wonder, etc. and re-invent them with new voicings, harmonies, and rhythms. The result is a captivating interpretation, in a jazz context that grabs and holds on to even the most critical listener. I was fortunate to see Hal and is pals perform at the Van Dyke Cafe in Miami recently. In a word "AMAZING!" Joining Hal on the CD are Steve Rucker, Drums, Matt Bonelli, Bass and Dave Fernandez, Saxes. These guys have played together for years and it shows. "Conversions" is a project worth getting a spot on the discriminating listeners playlist.
