ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
1.) "I Heard a Bird Sing"
The voice of the one and only Finn MacGinty on display reading a poem by Oliver Herford

2.) Jeanette Isabella / The Sussex Carol
Kathryn's first forays into fiddle playing were Christmas duets with her grandfather, Jan. We decided to medley these two popular pieces during our Japan tour in 2011.

3.) The Seven Joys of Mary / Coppers and Brass
This is another favorite carol of ours. It fit so nicely with the jig Coppers and Brass, which one could imagine getting on Christmas if you were good all year.

4.) Remember O Thou Man
I learned this song thanks to the miracle of modern technology; I found a video of Richard Thompson singing it in the back of a taxi cab.

5.) Christmas Eve / Unknown / The Foxhunter's Reel
I'll confess: when I learned the middle tune in this set, I was told it was called The 15th of January which fit perfectly in our collection. Turns out I was wrong, and I'm not sure of the actual title. It still sounds nice, though!

6.) In Dulci Jubilo / Drops of Brandy / The Three Sea Captains
Another tune from the Kathryn and Jan cannon, this time with a slip-jig (named after a winter remedy) and a set dance; the three captains of I Saw Three Ships fame, perhaps.

7.) The Coventry Carol
I have always considered this to be one of the most haunting carols.

8.) Pat-a-pan
A childhood favorite of Kathryn's.

9.) Apples in Winter / The Frost is All Over
No collection of winter tunes would be complete without this tried and true set. The first tune is the four-part version I first heard played by the band Beginish.

10.) The Wexford Carol
Many thanks to the Voice Squad for their collection of carols.

11.) "Ring Out, Wild Bells"
Another reading by Finn MacGinty to close the album, this time by Alfred Lord Tennyson.
