Anyone who loves their pet has got to love BALLAD OF ROCKY, Harve Mann’s ode to his beloved cat. As for the rest of this album, I believe this is Harve’s best batch yet. Culled from his vast archives (Harve’s been doing this a long time), this collection features two older songs SHINE YOUR LOVE and PERHAPS IN THE NEXT LIFE which were both recorded by the great TINY TIM as well as others. Among the newer material, REAL LIFE WATCHIN’ really shows Harve’s skills as a One-Mann Band featuring inspired solos on both piano and guitar. HOLY TO YOU and others showcase Harve live at the piano, some with a touch of strings added later. Harve’s humorous side is clearly evident on ATTACK OF THE KILLER CLONES one of his most popular live songs. In my opinion this album is the best showcase of Harve’s versatile vocals yet. His high note during the ride-out of PERHAPS IN THE NEXT LIFE is nothing short of astounding.
Although, this is pretty much a one-man effort, guest musicians include drummer and recording wiz Daoud Shaw (PERHAPS IN THE NEXT LIFE & RECHARGE MY BATTERY), stellar guitarist Peter Morrison (HEAVEN REACHED, PASSIN’ DOORS & PERHAPS ….) and two great bass players Michael Radcliff (PERHAPS ….) and Garry Lee (RECHARGE MY BATTERY). As a bonus cut, Harve included an original demo of WILD WEST WIGGLE (which eventually became DOIN’ THE SANTA CLAUS SHUFFLE) featuring the gifted Jeff Ganz on bass and electric drums.
All words and music are written by Harve with the exception of two collaborations with the legendary Don Sparks, I HAVEN’T EVEN LEFT and I WANNA BE THAT GIRL AGAIN which features the wonderful vocals of Kat Michaels(www.jandkat.com).
If you’ve never heard of Harve Mann this album is a good place to start. Be prepared to be dazzled.
