This is old-time Gospel at it's best !The Harvest Time Quartet is from Laurel County near London, Kentucky. They sang locally and in several surrounding states up into Michagan for their music presentations, also singing on radio in between church and other venue appearances. This sole album was done in LP 33 form in the mid to late 1970's. As an experienced friend of music said to me after listening to this project: "They are the real deal !"
On songs presented here, the group uses almost a "hollering" or "shouting" style in their Gospel delivery. One can't help but be stirred by it ! Each song seems to preach a sermon. This writer was so uplifted the first time it was heard that I felt like playing it over again, And I think I did !
The tenor singer, Wanda Krahenbuhl, has got to have one of the most dynamic voices this listener has ever heard. I was held in her spell and moved to wonder as she "sang out"the testimony given in music. You might compare her to Kate smith or Sophie Tucker. Everyone did a fine job in support of her and on individual solos of their own. Her mother, Iona Oakley, and lead singer, Creed Smith, were all excellent in their own right.
Although Creed has passed on, the three remaining members of The Harvest Time Quartet still sing and this writer had the esteemed opportunity to join them around the piano. Believe me, it was a pleasure.
Enjoy this masterpiece !
