Heavy Hammer: Not your everyday pipe band!
The boys of Heavy Hammer bring the thunderous BOOM of five huge drums and the raucous wail of the highland pipes to both traditional Scots/Irish music as well as original works! Originally out of the little town of Buckley WA, Heavy Hammer quickly branched out and has played all over the Pacific Northwest!
Heavy Hammer always brings the fun as one of the headliners at the Washington Midsummer Renaissance Faire to Scottish Clan gatherings, St. Paddy’s Day celebrations and everything in between!
The band started as collaboration between two long time Celtic music fans, Jon Crain and Mike Osborn. They wanted to bring both their enthusiasm for the whole genre out in a new way, but also bring a high energy interpretation of pipes and drums to a wider audience.
Taking inspiration from bands such as the Wicked Tinkers and Albannach, they knew there was an audience hungry for Celtic pipes and drums beyond the dress parade field and stodgy old tunes.
Many of the familiar bagpipe tunes have been brought to a new level, with even the greats like ‘Amazing Grace’ getting the Heavy Hammer treatment! The band has also enjoyed the recent blending of other tribal and world music, with examples like the ‘Afro Celt Sound System’ has brought in other strong influences into the shows. The original piece of “She moves”, written by band founder and piper Jon Crain blends pipes, drums, African Djembe into a powerful favorite that brings out the dancers in the crowd!
