ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Joe Hrbek has been performing and recording on the New York scene and touring around the world for the last 20 years. In the late 1990s when Joe was performing and teaching music in the British Virgin Islands, he fell deeply in love with the Brazilian sound. He decided to return to New York to record bossa nova and samba tunes, heavily influenced by Joao Gilberto and the writings of Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. What came out of those sessions is what we present to you now, "Sambossa", which exemplifies Hrbek's passion for the Brazilian melodies and rhythms. Hrbek was fortunate to have on hand some of the finest Brazilian musicians on the New York scene, Vanderlei Pereira on drums and Paolo Andre Tavares on guitar, as well as David Shaich on bass.

Joe Hrbek has been performing and touring with soul jazz guitar legend Melvin Sparks since 2000, and has been featured on two Melvin Sparks Band recordings on the Savant label, the critically acclaimed "What You Hear Is What You Get" and soon to be released, "It Is What It Is". Hrbek's other recording credits include Daktaris, Soul Providers, Soweto Soleil & the Flames of Fire, Joe Battaglia's New York Big Band, and many others.

Discover Joe Hrbek's soulful, sensual sound in one of the most beautiful genres known to music, Brazilian jazz - on the CD "Sambossa".

"Sambossa is just beautiful. It makes you feel like you are really in Rio de Janeiro. Hrbek's quartet gets into each composer's mind, playing bossa nova the way it was intended to be played -- a simple, sophisticated sound. So lyrical and in tune with the Brazilian landscape, Hrbek's playing brings to mind the shades of lush green rainforest, and the sparkling blue of Ipanema seaside. The alto saxophone has a clear, marvelous tone. Joe Hrbek's "Sambossa" -- Brother Samba and Sister Bossa, hand in hand to fall in love again on the beat of 'Batida Diferente.' As Jobim said: 'Music is something eternal. It is not as disposable as my razor' (Antonio Carlos Jobim)"

groovin',swinging, warm& fuzzy
this is one fine cd. These songs will relax you, make you smile, and then without knowing it, you will start dancing. Joe Herbek (who also plays alto sax for soul jazz great Melvin Sparks) has taken these bossa classics to heart. His playing runs from sweet to soulful to sexy. The guitarist, Paulo Andre Tavares, from Brasilia, wrote many of the arrangements and evokes the classic bossa nova sound. He is a wonderful player. Vanderlei Pereira, on drums, is one of the top NY brazilian musicians and lays down the groove with spirit and finesse. David Shaich, on acoustic bass provides the solid foundation and a big fat tone to propel this music right where it needs to go. Check it out.

Lovely way to start a day.
Sambossa is lovely. The instruments blend so well, the selection of songs is excellent, and I especially enjoy the selections from Black Orpheus. I push the play button as I awake to the new day, and the lyrical sounds are the first I hear.

A must have for your collection.
I've been going to see Joe Herbek play in the NYC area for twelve years now, so when this album came out I bought a copy right away. I haven't gone a day without listening to it since. Sambossa is all about vibe and groove. These wonderful musicians have captured a feel that puts them right along side the greatest Brazilian artists. While there is plenty of improvisation, the focus of Sambossa is melody. You'll find yourself humming these beautiful tunes long after the CD has finished playing. I bought copies for my parents and my 18 year old niece and they all loved it. You should buy it too. You'll be happy you did.

Sambossa is standout Brazilian jazz with a unique lyrical sound.
Joe Herbek's latest CD is his and the group's best yet. It's a standout among efforts in this area of music by virture of it's warmth, lyricism and creative improvisation. The listener who knows this music will be constantly surprised by the poetry and feeling, the individual choices , and the whole groove. The band is tight, energtic, and elegant, setting up Herbek's rounded warm sax sound as beautifully as a voice in a tropical landscape. Gentle Rain is particularly a gem, but then again, so is every cut.
