ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
2-CD collection of thought-provoking songs with magnificent musical contributions by Inti-Illimani, Rhiannon, Mercedes Sosa, Brian Lane Green, John Bucchino, Robben Ford, June Millington, and more

Holly Near is a powerful voice for change. After 30 years of work in social change movements, Near's historical perspective as well as her contemporary activism continue to challenge and inspire audiences around the country.

The spectrum of her work is staggering. She presents an inspiring and entertaining keynote while her teaching is a mix of history, therapy, and investigation of craft. Her songwriting invites the listener to his/her best self and her singing voice is full of range and dynamics; indeed, her voice is stronger than it has ever been.

She got a dynamic start in film and television in the early 1970s. But the world caught her attention, fueling her cultural and political perspective, and she began singing full time. Today, Holly calls herself "an elder in training". Experience has brought wisdom to her perspective and her singing has matured.

In addition to solo concerts, collaborations and festival, her 2004 season includes conducting a three day master class at The Leaven Center in Michigan, delivering the keynote address for the American Family Therapy Association in San Francisco and the annual Ware Lecture for the Unitarian Universalist Association in Long Beach, California; participating in Healing Journeys: Cancer as a Turning Point™ in Seattle, Washington, and appearing at The HerbFest in Norway, Iowa.

In the fall of 2003, Holly was invited to join Harry Belafonte, Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon and Pete Seeger at Ohio State University to discuss political song and how it has affected social change, public policy and responsible citizenship. In summer 2003, she received standing ovations both before and after singing at the Falconridge Folk Festival, and she and Ronnie Gilbert were greeted with great enthusiasm at the Oregon Country Fair. Recently, she has participated in a gala performance of the Vagina Monologues as part of the effort to raise consciousness around issues of violence against women.

Near has reissued her over 20 recordings on several historical collections (on her own label, Calico Tracks Music), and she continues to record new material: Edge (which includes the songs I Ain't Afraid and Planet Called Home) and Cris & Holly, a collaboration with Cris Williamson. She sings on the recent tribute recordings to Pete Seeger, released on Appleseed Recordings.

And Still We Sing: The Outspoken Collection
Very COOL!!!!! My Children, 13, 14, & 15 enjoy this music. When I was a child my sister used to sing "It Could Have Been Me" in the bath tub when she gave me a bath. I have always remembered all the words to this song. Such a larg part of my childhood. Thanks, Great Music. Great CD. Great memories.

Holly Near does it again!
I have been a Holly Near fan since the 70s. She keeps me motivated, activated and pumped up about the issues that face us all as citizens of this earth. This CD is one of her best. Now if only the Live Album would come out on CD I would be in heaven.

These songs remind us of how much we are all a part of history. Thank you Holly!

And Still We Sing
I love Holly's music. I have seen her Live, on stage, and in Oregon, at a fair. I had fun turning my teen agers on to this artist - and was delighted to see them react the way I did when I first heard her in my twenties! Sadly, we still need her and folk singers strong enough to sing about what counts...beautiful as always. And CDBaby got it to me SO FAST!!! Thanks!

Holly Near has been an inspiration since I first heard her in the mid-1980s around the Greenham Common protests in Britain. This CD brings together my favourites from my old vinyl collection, together with some newer material. It conveys the dynamic internationalism of her work. Desperately needed today in this uni-polar world. I look forward to hearing her sing in Arabic with someone like Ilham al Madfai.

A wonderful collection of Holly's best protest songs.
This collection includes my favorite protest songs from Foolish Notion (the best peace song ever written) to Mountain Woman and Singing for Our Lives. It is a real tribute to Holly's strong feminist philosophy and her equally strong voice. Should be part of every activist's, folk singer's, and music lover's collection.

Awesome voice
Holly's music has always been an inspiration. She is a kind and compassionate being in this somewhat terrifying and troublesome world. I wish we all could have Holly's passion and live to heal the world. Awesome ...the only word that comes to mind!!!

Cindy

wonder singing and songs
Wonderful to hear Holly Near again singing songs I haven't heard before. Songs of peace and love can't be beat, good production on CD, too.

Worth every penny
This is an excellent collection. I especially like having lyrics with the CD, and appreciate English translations of Spanish songs. Would love Spanish lyrics also -- perhaps future printings (?) could include both. Can't wait for Holly's concert in Providence next month!

Great CD Set...I don't think Holly could sing a bad song if she tried!!!!
Great CD set....Holly's music is remarkable and I don't think she could sing a bad song if she tried!!!! The other artists add variety...and unfortunately, the peace themes are as needed today as they were when they were written....Thanks! Holly and Company
