Album Notes
Carla has been singing most of her life. Her love for people shows in her day job as a counselor and in her song selections. She is a juried life-time member of the Kentucky Arts Counsel's Performing Artist Directory and a member of the Southen Artistry Registry.

Carla Van Hoose has a strong base in Bluegrass but adds folk, blues and a little rock to a performance. Her repertoire dips into many shades of American music. She uses a special sensitivity to select material from Kentucky’s talented songwriters as well as nationally known composers that captivate and inspire audiences. She composed Man With a Plan on Moonlit Mountain Road with Brad Burtner.

Carla started singing before she went to school and was encouraged by performances in church choirs, high school concert choirs and special events. She is one of the original members of SisterSound, a Lexington based choir. As an eight year member of the First Presbyterian Church Choir, she has studied with its directors Marlon Hurst, formerly with the Robert Shaw Chorale, Dr. Everett McCorvey, founder and director of the internationally touring American Spiritual Ensemble and Dr. Gary Anderson, also choral director at Transylvania University.

Carla Van Hoose’s musical talents have been enhanced by gifted performers in her own family. Aunt Mac, Miss Francis Marie McPherson Stewart, composed, performed and taught music at Eastern Kentucky University for twenty-seven years. Carla’s grandmother McPherson had “the loveliest voice in Buchanan County, MO” where she inspired all those who heard her sing. It is only natural for Carla to pass on those same qualities that stream through her family heritage.

Her debut CD, “Old Times and Memories”, released in 2001, is a well constructed and cleverly crafted recording that has been ordered from listeners as far away as Canada and Holland. On this project, she worked with Vince Emmett, Peter Rhee, a violinist who has performed with Chakka Kahn, Richard Bennett, an internationally known Bluegrass guitarist/singer/songwriter and Nashville musician, Ernie King.

“Kentucky Home”, Carla’s 2nd CD, features Kentucky composers and Kentucky themes. Gerry Gillespie, bassist with Kathy Mattea’s for 17 years, Kati Penn, a well known Bluegrass fiddler, Raliegh Dailey, UK professor and jazz pianist, Paul D. Williams, mandolin player for No Tools Loaned, and Warren Iulg, singer/songwriter, join her in this new work showing a breath of styles which typify Carla’s performances.

Carla has appeared in Kentucky, Colorado, Missouri, West Virginia, Tennessee and Canada. Some of her highlight performances include Alfalfa’s Restaurant,Boyd's Orchard, J.D Crowe Festival, Woodland Arts Fair, Downtown Mayfest, Governors Breakfast, Capitol Expo,Mountain Opry, The Cheshire Cat, Art ala Cart and Poor Richard’s Bookstore. Carla makes return appearances on WUKY’s award winning, Curtains @ 8!, radio show, Music from the Mountains, West Virginia Public Radio, Americana Crossroads Live, Morehead, KY, Art ala Cart, Woodsongs Coffee House and on television shows, including WKYT-TV Afternoon Show and KET-II.

Moonlit Mountain Road is Carla's third CD. The sweet sound of her vocals shines brighter with each recording. The songs on this album show how fun, funny and facsinating people can be. Each track tells a tale of someone you will meet if you don't already know them. It is a journey.

Riding Down a Mountain Road set the album tone. It was inspired by a motorcycle ride in the mountains where he met a working class town of people who gathered weekly to play music and share a zest for life, even when conditions were hard. I May Be Down and Bottom of the Barrel let you get up and keep going in hard times. Time to Settle Down is a hard life choice. Under the Tennessee Moon and Honky Tonk Moon are about lazy days of relaxing with someone you love. Man With a Plan and No New Tales tell about "real characters".
Fly Me to the Moon is lost love and Gone at Last is a familiar, special favorite Paul Simon song with a gospel choir back ground.

The variety of styles in the songs make this CD easy to listen to and give you a chance to experience life from many perspectives.

Enjoy the ride!
