ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Jimmy Hotz - Beyond the Crystal Sea - Review by Ken Scott

"Ask any in-the-know collector about the best Christian progressive art rock album and the answer is usually as toss up between Arkangel’s Warrior and this one. Beyond The Crystal Sea is the heavier and spacier of the two, plastered with what seems like layer upon layer of synthesizers. ‘March Of The Dead Souls’ pins your ears to the wall from the start with its hard space rock barrage and eerie banshee choirs. Hotz’s layered hard rock guitar is absolutely venomous on ‘Hand Of The Most High’ and the instrumental ‘Teton’, while ‘Vision Ships’, ‘Beyond The Blues’, and ‘From Love Life Did Begin’ are more reminiscent of the melodic lavish textures of Yes (though vocally Hotz brings to mind Peter Gabriel of early Genesis). Kemper Crabb is in here playing recorder on ‘Alpine Magic’. The production quality is superb as is the fantasy cover art. If you’ve got a good stereo you’re gonna wanna blast this up loud. It’s out of this world!" (Ken Scott - Archivist)

LYRICS:

I. OBSERVATIONS OF A LARGER REALITY
A. MARCH OF THE DEAD SOULS
B. HAND OF THE MOST HIGH

OBSERVATIONS OF A LARGER REALITY

In the stillness of the morning
I hear the weakened cries
Of those who march as dead souls
To bring more pain and strife
They seem to be the victors
But they only know defeat
As they march against the Mighty King
Who’s called the Prince of Peace

Stand all you children
Be not frightened by their cries
Don’t let your souls be touched
By the madness in their eyes

(Angelic Interlude)

Across the field of battle
You will see the darkened eyes
Of him who is called Satan,
The father of all lies
The Devil has been wounded
And in torment he will be
For though he mends his body
His soul can find no peace

Stand all you children
Be not frightened by his cries
Don’t let your souls be touched
By the madness in his eyes

(Angelic Interlude)

II. NIGHT PASSAGE

III. THE VISION SHIP

THE VISION SHIP

Sail on winged ships
To shores that unfold
To lands that lie
Beyond the Crystal Sea
Board the Vision Ship
And let your worries go
Far away

Rest my weary neighbor
With dreams in your heart
Sing of far and distant lands
Board the Vision Ship
And let your worries go

Then spread your love wings and fly
Spread your love wings and fly

Life’s Magic Queen does lift her head
And then begins to speak
Words of truth to carry us
Beyond the Crystal Sea

The darkness of the night
Does dress her hair with stars
To light the way for lonely sailors
Drifting from afar
Who’ve come to know the light
They’ve come to know the light

So, when it seems that your journey
Is far from its end
And your hope has all gone away
If your heart is burning
For the joy it once knew
Well, my friend
There’s still hope for you
You just board the Vision Ship
And let your worries go

Then spread your love wings and fly
Spread your love wings and fly

IV. TETON

V. BEYOND THE BLUES

BEYOND THE BLUES

The brightness of the morning’s got a hold on me
And I see everything just like new
I can tell by the flicker and the gleam in your eye
That the brightness got a hold on you

We are but as children sleeping
Lying in the dew
Waking with each ray of sunlight
To a road that leads beyond the blues

Listen to the softness of the flowers as they sing
A song of joy and peace
The colors of the mountains
And the coolness of the streams
All seem to flow into me

We are but as children sleeping
Lying in the dew
Waking with each ray of sunlight
To a road that leads beyond the blues

As we look above us let our hearts sing out
With praise for all we see
And look unto the hills as we call upon God
And pray for our brothers in need

For they are but as children sleeping
Lying in the dew
Waking with each ray of sunlight
To a road that leads beyond the blues

VI. ALPINE MAGIC

VII. FROM LOVE LIFE DID BEGIN

FROM LOVE LIFE DID BEGIN

It’s time I be going
He says as he starts to ascend
To far away places
Where the magic of life did begin

Well I’m off with the wind
To prepare us a place
Far from the reaches
Of this time and space
Where life from love did begin
From love life did begin

Remember to share all the life
I have shown you within
For the souls of the sleeping
Are ready to be born again

Well I’m off with the wind
To prepare us a place
Far from the reaches
Of this time and space
Where life from love did begin
From love life did begin

For those who believe
In magic lands
I’ve seen them and it’s true
That the things we find
In our hopes and our dreams
Are real for me and you

But it seems this world
May never see
The land where life began
From - Love

Jimmy's album has this heart rending, yearning quality about it.
Further thoughts on this LP; For one, I think it blasts Arkangel's "Warrior" into deep space and that saying alot because "Warrior" is a good album with some wonderfully inventive turns. Jimmy's album has this heart rending, yearning quality about it and if there ever was a guitar that demonstrates how a guitar gently weeps, it's the one on "Observations of a larger reality" - an interesting three part tune that starts big and gets bigger, just climbing the scale and getting higher till the tension is finally broken by some heavy rock riffing. But this is all just the prelude to one fantastic piece and the guitar is superlative in creating a weepy atmosphere. The whole album actually is good. I've been a bit disappointed in my initial impressions of Chiristian prog/art rock. Fortunately, music grows on me and I tend to persevere even if I don't think too much of something initially...This wasn't one of those albums though. It hit me from the kick off and it is beautifully played. This style has become fashionable in rock critic circles to knock as being pretentious, bombastic etc, but like anything, if you actually like something, you'll easilly see the plusses and negatives, but above all, just enjoy the thing !
There is a neat balance between the guitar and synthesizers and the bassist and drummer deserve a mention too because in all honesty, without their dynamism and drive, this wouldn't be half so impressive. Whoever they are they were a creative duo who knew when to pull back and when to let go. The other thing to mention is that apart from "Night passage", each song absolutely drips with good melodies {grimtraveller}.

Great album
This is another one that brings back old memories for me. Happy to see this released on CD. Excellent production for a classic Christian album.
