Born from the depths of Foolishness herself, i am Fool is injecting new life into the Syracuse music scene as an up-and-coming major player, bestowing upon an ever-increasing number of loyal fans the much-welcomed raw vibe, clever song-craft, and infectious vigor that has been conspicuously missing from local live music.
A genre-defying and energetic band with an undeniably unique edge, i am Fool was originally the brainchild of
local actor and singer/songwriter J. Brazill and drummer “Brother John” Clark. As they honed their craft, Brazill reconnected with his childhood friend and guitarist, Mike “Noodles” Sweeney, with whom Brazill had founded
his first band 25 years earlier.
Sweeney’s entrance to the band was soon followed by the original bass player’s exit, and the three continued to play without a bassist in an attempt to bring their brand of self-defined “Foolish Rock” to the stages of Central New York.
One evening while the band played at a local open mic night, they met journeyman bassist “Reverend Ken”
Kellerman, a veteran musician of many genres and styles, from R&B and soul to folk, rock and more. After an impromptu jam with the band, Reverend Ken realized he needed to be a part of the Foolery, and the band soon realized they had found their new bass player.
The band recently added professional artist and musician, Tamaralee (Tami) Shutt to the lineup. A close friend and colleague of Brazill’s from the Syracuse theater scene, Shutt is a locally celebrated and award-winning vocalist who plays trumpet, piano, and percussion. Shutt’s performance background in jazz, soul and musical theater adds to the unique and quirky band sound.
The band, while dedicated to showcasing their own music, also applies their talent and perspective to an electic mix of cover songs, offering fan favorites that are both familiar and refreshingly outside the typical repertoire.
The meaning of the band’s unusual name is an oft asked question whose answer is found in Brazill’s eponymous song, i am Fool, that leads off this new CD!
