Wow! What can I say? This disc rules! If Man Is Five is a local quartet lead by the vocal talents of Angela Timon and backed up by Brianna Standish-Salazar on guitar, Allen Spencer on bass, and Shawn Swayze on drums. They offer a breath of fresh air in a stale male fronted scene, with songs about lonliness, dissappointment and betrayal. Some highlights include, "Hemmorhage", Twilight Zone", and "Azraela". The band blends sweet melodies with an all out rage to come up roses. I highly recommend getting this. I haven't taken it out of my CD player for 3 weeks now. I would like to add that this was produced by George Wheeler at Black Azul studios. (well done my friend, well done) So stop reading this and get your arse down to Music City and get this CD!! Well What are you waiting for?? GO!

If Man Is Five CD is full of raw energy!
This CD has a great sound, lots of emotional angst, and powered by one strong lead vocalist and a flawless band.

It's pretty and creepy and sad and just. plain. amazing. Angela Timon has joined the pantheon of musical goddesses. (For those keeping track, she's right between Aimee Mann and DM of the Missing)

heavy experimental rock
Then the Devil is Six

Not every star who wants to be discovered has to put their dignity and integrity on the line on "American Idol." Instead of waiting for a golden ticket into the record industry, some musicians actually take the initiative to go out and do it themselves. Take Azraela, the debut from Binghamton, New York's If Man Is Five. This tight 4-piece has been churning out solid heavy experimental rock since 2002, slowly but steadily building a fan base along the way.

With Azraela, we find a band that has grown comfortable challenging stale pop rock while developing their songwriting and craftsmanship. Lead vocalist Angela Timon has possibly one of the most beautifully powerful voices in independent music. And her melodies and harmonies are accomplished without the studio glaze that has become almost omnipresent on the radio.

Any fan of the Pixies can recognize where If Man is Five takes a good deal of influence. But like their indie-rock pioneering forefathers (and mothers), If Man is Five is not content to explore a single musical direction. Timon's melodic vocals are perfectly counterbalanced by drummer Evan McNamara's raspy screams and bludgeoning beats. Guitarist Brianna Standish-Salazar and bassist Sara Arsenault switch between raging powerchords and delicately woven melodies. Each song is composed to move from brutality to beauty and back again without sounding too segmented or jarring the listener.

If Man is Five is a raw rebuttal to bands like Evanescence and Garbage, a challenge to throw out the formulas and production tricks and to start writing inspired rock again. As Timon wails on "Hemorrhage," "I never asked for anything!" Sure enough, this band doesn't take anything for granted.

Girl Punk Review

I never had so much fun listening to such gloomy songs.
I never had so much fun listening to such gloomy songs. Azraela, the debut album from Binghamton, New York group If Man is Five is permeated with lyrics about alienation and abandonment, but are sung in such a compelling way, it rises above whining into true songwriting craft .

The melodic singing of Angela Timon contrasted with the hard rock guitar riffs of Brianna Salazar give the songs a unique quality that drive their dark lyrics. The first song, “ Twilight Zone’’ has lyrics that sound claustrophobic ( “ That which was my haven/ Now is more like my tomb’’). “ Waltz’’ has Timon singing about sabotage, and the title track is about a girl who “ taught herself to hate’’ and “ hides in shadows’’. In “ Desolate’’ she screams, “ I’ll be a good girl/ and keep my mouth shut’’, and in the minute-long closer “ Six Years Later’’, duets with Allen Spencer and again sings about self-doubt and disappointment: “ After all is lost/What have I become?/And at what cost?’’

A standout track is the headbanger “ Hemorrhage’’ in which Timon seems to be channeling Sleater-Kinney lead singer Corin Tucker. Timon wails in a similar manner, and the song sounds like a disgruntled housewife talking to a husband that takes her for granted, singing, “ I can’t make you look at me’’ and my personal favorite lyrics “ I never asked for anything/ sexually or otherwise’’. Another favorite is “ This Reality’’ in which Timon rails against the vapidity of pop culture and “ models in the magazines/ with the cosmetic pills and cosmetic surgery.’’

Azraela is a promising start from If Man is Five. If those Clear Channel stations were smart, they would play this album’s pessimistic but engaging songs in between Limp Bizkit and Korn on their playlists.
