ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Index AI: Topiary En Hades, pt. 1

Topiary En Hades is the 6th full length by electro act Index AI, produced by Eric Chamberlain. The first of two parts, Topiary En Hades is a personal exploration of beauty within darkness, a theme that is consistent throughout the history of Index. Ranging from aggressive industrial dance tracks like Mortal Colors to moody, introspective tracks like Aerugo Clouds, Crayon Sky and Carbon Soul, this work is a sonic representation of a personal metamorphosis, literally, flowering in hell (or in spite of it). When everything else is so dominated by mind numbing, four-on-the-floor electro industrial, Topiary En Hades provides a deeper, more textural work to explore and enjoy, while being a driving electro record at the same time.

Reviews

"Index (Chamberlain) has by far one of the most original and unique
sounds to come out of the electronic genre" - Culture Shock

"With this release, [Chamberlain] has accomplished more than most
electronic/industrial artists do in their career." - Jo Anne Greene,
Alternative Press

"I really have a passionate love for [Faith In Motion] which is
probably the electronic album of the year." - Best of the Best

"Already one of the most talented writer of electro, he releases here
an even more complex but mastered music. [Chamberlain fs] music is
extremely rich. An incredible numbers of sound layers are used, and
effects are omnipresent." - Nicolas Chevreux, www.recycleyourears.com

" Ultra Hard Shadow is a dreamscape of otherworldly brilliance, both
melodic and foreboding at the same time. This diverse and paradoxical
nature is also obvious with the melding of various influences
(including classical, industrial and techno) with pure electronic
creativity. Chamberlain's complex style is both infectious and moving,
and worth every penny. I recommend Ultra Hard Shadow emphatically." -
Legends Magazine

"Eric Chamberlain is, in my opinion, producing the best music
available...so much subtlety and beauty, it fs enough to throw you
into a world straight out of Neuromancer-Eric is absolutely
brilliant." - Lor

"Chamberlain has by far one of the most original sounds to ever come
out of the electronic genre...beautiful ambience and percussion. Eric
Chamberlain is pure brilliance."- Outburn

"One of the few musicians to explore the fertile but perplexing
landscape of the postmodern...Music that trasnscends industrial
music...hypertextural, the sonics a collage where every piece serves
an integral purpose." - Chaotic Critiques

"Easily one of the most innovative and sophisticated musicians working
in the electronic scene today...a master craftsman." - Culture Shock

"[Ultra Hard Shadow] is without a doubt a jewel for the electronic
scene." - Nicolas Chevreux, www.recycleyourears.com

"A very melodic and dreamlike approach to electronic music, with a
semi-classical inspiration. Lying beneath that surface however, is an
ominous sense of darkness that pervades the multi-layered textures...
will appeal to fans of intelligent and futuristic electronic music." -
Middle Pillar

Bio

Eric Chamberlain has been recording, producing and tinkering with music since he was 13 years old. Starting by making his own mixes of hip hop artists and then rapping over them by using some headphones plugged into the mic socket in the back of an old ghetto blaster, Eric almost instantly saw the value in exploring different genres of young, hip music. After finally getting his own gear, starting with a Kawai drum machine, Eric began producing his own sound, a cross between early hip hop, Kraftwerk, and industrial music.

As time passed, Eric found an audience for his music on college radio and continued to refine his own sound. What ultimately came to be his signature style was electro tinged with elements of industrial music (or the other way around, depending on who you ask) mixed with a strong dose of ambiance. It was during this time that Eric formed the band Index.

Under Eric's leadership and vision, Index was quickly signed to the German recording label C.O.P. International. The first release, Never This Infliction, was a four song EP that generated a strong buzz for the upcoming full-length. When Sky Laced Silver was released, Index was instantly known around the clubs and dance floors of Europe for the aggressive rhythms mixed with ethereal and dreamlike melodies and haunting, otherworldly lyrics.

Because of creative differences, Eric chose to be the sole member of Index. Forging ahead by himself, Eric continued the journey by releasing Black Light Twilight, a full-length CD that received even greater critical acclaim than the first two releases and made Index a household name in the world of electronic music. This was followed by Faith In Motion, which garnered the greatest interest yet and even more college and alternative radio play.

During this time, Chamberlain also produced his first side project, a full-length CD titled Empyreal Day Dreams, under the project name Skylash. This project was more dance oriented and appealed to a wider audience. Following this release was Eric's best and most diverse release to date, the full-length Ultra Hard Shadow, which received rave reviews from the press and was called "a jewel for the electro scene". It was during this time that Eric expanded his musical roles and began producing remixes for other bands as well as branching out into producing material for advertising.

Eric's latest CD, a full-length titled World Blade Center, also under the name Index, was called one of the most important electronic releases ever. Featuring Eric's most advanced production skills and a mixture of old and new styles, World Blade Center pushed the envelope of what was considered industrial music, fusing elements of trip hop with neoclassical in addition to Eric's trademark blend of darkness and beauty.

Today, Eric releases music on his own label, Aural SX, always striving to improve what he is capable of and to push the boundaries of electronic music.
