ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Rob Clearfield writes songs of breath-taking beauty and he’s a wonderful pianist, too!”
~Marilyn Crispell (ECM Records; Anthony Braxton Quartet)

“Leslie Beukelman has such a natural way about her singing. Her pitch, her range, her sound, her interpretation is extraordinary."
~Maria Schneider (Grammy Award Winning Artist)

"Fresh, super-cool,"
~Grazyna Auguscik (GMA Records)

"Rob Clearfield...is a star in the making. Drawing on disparate influences—progressive and modern rock, gospel and straight jazz—First Morning is the result of his collaboration with vocalist Leslie Beukelman, whom he met at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Together they create both tender, spellbinding beauty, as on 'Your Voice-Part 1,' and pulsating, assertive dynamics, as on 'Simple Unfolding.' The closing track, 'Song for a Child,' is an earnest jazz lullaby, with Clearfield's piano sketching streaks of twilight."
~Louis R. Carlozo (Christian Century; Chicago Tribune)

Debut recording from one of Chicago's most promising young bands. Born of the long-standing collaboration of vocalist Leslie Beukelman and keyboardist/composer Rob Clearfield, Information Superhighway continues to explore and create interesections of sophisticated art music and accesible pop music. Alongside bandmates John Smillie on drums and Patrick Mulcahy on bass, these seven tracks wind their way through everything from modern jazz to singer/songwriter folk-pop to prog rock to luscious soundscapes to ambient indie post-rock.

Simple Beauty Unfolding Before Your Ears
What an album, with the innocent voice of Leslie and this amazing band, all flowing together in a stream of pure flowing music. Use of effects adds to the songs, and fans of My Morning Jacket/Sigur Ros will love the end of track 1. the wordless pieces are absolutely breathtaking, and fans of jason moran and bad plus will really enjoy Simple Unfolding's use of beats and effects on instruments. Very enjoyable ostinatos from Dave Holland-like lyrical bass to sterophonic rhodes and tight shifting sands of percussion. Vocal style is similar to Kate McGarry/Luciana Souza/Claudia Villela, but definitely a very personable voice that touches the soul upon hearing. The more pop flavored Still has my favorite lyrics on the album and you'll find yourself singing along with the group's ostinatos/melodic line by the end of Song for a Child. Pick this up if you're into moving, organic music "beyond category" as Ellington would say!

AWESOMENESS!!!
I told you Leslie, it was only a matter of time. The musicians on this album are top notch and at the start of an amazing career. I went to school with all these guys and was blow away the first time I heard them together! The band has some serious talent and plays very well together--TRUE PROS. And Leslie--what can I say; she's one of the freshest, most passionate singers I've ever heard! Plus she's got a real ear and can sing live and in TUNE! Expect to see more from this great group and do yourself a favor and pick up a copy or two today.
