ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Step inside and listen closely to Jennifer Turner's cathartic, mesmerizing confession: lovetheonlyway.

Beautifully schizophrenic and emotionally wrecked, Jennifer's full-length debut on Caboose Music is ultimately as stripped, provocative and textured as the Los Angeles musician's own unconventional past. Grabbing the attention of music mavens by lending her guitar playing and co-writing skills to Natalie Merchant's breakthrough album Tigerlily, Jennifer broke out on her own--manufacturing the highly evolved rock infusion known as Furslide, touring with the likes of Alanis Morrisette and Lenny Kravitz, and receiving tremendous national praise. Never one to be pinned down or boxed in, she confused the industry minds once again by leaving her band and Virgin Records to--gasp!--start her own independent label and build this newest, most profound project from the inside out.

The result is a truly unimaginable and unpredictable collection of pure consciousness that tears at the fabric of fragile emotions. The album's first track, "Slither," sets the tone as it slides under your cynical skin and into your broken little heart. Raw mood and atmosphere abound throughout lovetheonlyway where Jennifer's passionate songs of melancholy, hope, and defiance blur seamlessly into one another.

Lovetheonlyway precisely points out that Jennifer Turner and Inner are no one-dimensional, one-trick rabbit.
The newly christened three-piece of Inner--with Jennifer on electric guitar, Erica Quitzow on Rhodes, moog and electric bass and Samuel Omeechevaria on drums-- returns to the west coast roads once again this summer for a choo-choo tour that is certain to hit an unsuspecting town near you. With wundertriplet powers activated and trusty bottles of Bragg's in tow, Inner is as dynamic and captivating as ever. Be on the look out and hitch a ride on the Caboose now.

Beautifully mellow with the occasional shake waking you up, lovetheonlyway is a soft, rich work of art, an indie pop record with folk and ambient influences, even stretching the boundaries and incorporating a little Brit-Pop ("Cantsitstill").

Without fear or inhibitions, Inner delves deep down and pulls out an honest, strong collection of songs that will leave you with little more to say than, "Wow!" This is indie pop taken to the next level, an album that shows the potential of lo-fi and how the talented take advantage to create raw, intimate albums with balls, like this one. I'll give it an A.

9,999 Maniacs, One Smart Cookie

Hmmmm. Let me see. Now if you were lead guitarist for former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant, and you just came off a world tour for Merchant's multi-platinum record Tigerlily, would you up and quit the band?

Hey, maybe you wanted freedom to do your own thing. I can understand that. So you form your own band, Furslide, and you get signed to Virgin Records, win rave reviews for your live shows, but again you promptly disband before you make it big. That's a little harder to understand.

So here you come again, Jennifer Turner, with your new band, Inner and I can't help but feel like you're a girl who cried wolf, or record deal, or "I quit!" But then I stuck your CD in my player and suddenly "I get it." Instead of playing second fiddle to Merchant, instead of being limited by the tight machinery of Furslide's highly evolved sound, you're doing what you like.

Suddenly I'm reminded of the raw power of early P.J. Harvey and the seething emotion bubbling out of Liz Phair's happy melodies. You are not Natalie Merchant's clone. You may, however, be a powerful albeit quiet new voice in indie rock.

Essential, unique, beautiful
I bought this based entirely on hearing about 40 seconds of the album's second track, "myphilosophy", and it's proved to be one of the best impulse purchases I've ever made, EASILY leaping into my top 5 albums of all time.

The bottom line is - if you love music, you NEED this album. The 13 tracks on offer (though 2 tracks are essentially interludes) are ridiculously diverse, yet still all sound like they SHOULD be together. According to Inner's Wikipedia article they are "an indie rock band", however "lovetheonlyway" ranges from sleepy electronica, to heart-wrenchingly beautiful acoustic stuff, to catchy choruses over hip-hop beats, to experimental folk, via completely indescribable songs like "myphilosophy" and "morninglikeme".

Lyrically, the album is brutally honest and quite bitter - I defy you to listen to "stories", concentrate on the lyrics, and not feel like you've just had your guts ripped out. The central themes of lost love and wanting a happy, simple life are dealt with openly and honestly, without being obvious and predictable; cleverly without being pretentious.

It's hard to believe that this album is already 7 years old - I've listened to it at least 100 times since I bought it and it still sounds fresh, I haven't got bored of a single song. It's a shame this is Inner's only full-length, but the band recently started gigging again this year, so a second album could well be on the cards.

"lovetheonlyway" is one of the most raw, emotional, eclectic and beautiful albums I've ever had the pleasure of purchasing, and I urge you to buy it.

seriously, thank you
Just recieved my second copy of this album in the mail and am currently listening to 'stories' and am just now recovering from 'Downtome'. By the first "I wanted you" , I was sobbing. By the third, I was punching holes in the walls and throwing around furniture. Not really but the point is its' not often a piece of music creates such powerful emotions and this album does. Hair standing up, about to hyperventilate. Amazing stuff. I can't wait for the next album cause I can't get enough of this one. Thank you Jennifer. You absolutely blow me away.

A Long Time Coming
I've been looking for this for a long time. Having no idea what I was getting myself into, I saw Inner live at a tiny bar in Eugene, Oregon called Sam Bond's (2003?). They were awesome!!! It was an unforgettable performance. I couldn't find any of the albums anywhere until now...well worth the wait.

Original sound and great musicians
This is one of the most original cds I've heard in a long time, I appreciate the feeling and hardwork that was put into the songs. Thanks for the great new music.

wait, what's this?
I can remember playing pool with friends in the Eastside Club in Olympia Washington sometime in 2002. It was the middle of the week and some bank was setting up. I'd never heard of them but I knew that they were friends with some local musicians I knew and respected. While they were setting up, I happened to notice that the guitarist (Jennifer Turner) was doing some incredible things on guitar while she was warming up. I talked to her briefly before the show, having no idea that she was part of Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs...only that she knew her shit. I bought both CD's and left the bar...I wish I had stayed to listen to the show. I had no idea I was in the prescence of fucking genious. An absolutely brilliant, emotional and intimate look at Jennifers life. I absolutely regret not sticking around to watch that show. For her to walk away from 'the industry' to do her own thing is massive. This woman has enormous...well, for lack of a more delicate adjective...balls. And her voice absolutely melts me. Aimie Mann...get out of my head. There's Jennifer. I only hope they're still playing and recording.

flow
I honestly have no business writing a review of this CD. All i know is that INNER is coming from a very pure place. When i connect with music on any level, it always has the same effect. I feel like i am in a flow. A stream of conscienceness that feels like someone has come in to speak my emotions. Inner is topping my list.

HOLiNESS
This cd is the greatest music I have heard in years. I don't have any idea where it came from, I am blessed to have stumbled upon it, I usually only dig hip hop tracks but I just can't help but to be blown to bits and pieces by something about this record. I am a changed man, and I have to offer my complete COMPLETE recommendation. Inner and Outkast should jam together sometime! Whoa!

Mind Blowing. Period.
Being signed to a major for years, I have heard anything everything always from everyone, people constantly tugging at my sleeve for me to listen, listen listen. I received an Inner cd from my friend Billy who helped arrange 2 of LovetheOnlyWay's incredible tracks. I have not taken it out of my walkman, I have made over 100 copies of it (shame on me....), and I have to say: you need to hear this record to continue to live.
Knowing this kind of genius is out there makes me feel silly when we sell millions of copies of our records... I am inspired beyond my wildest dreams, thank you Inner, thank you Jennifer....the record is simply Mind Blowing. Period.
