Jazz bassist and composer Anne Mette Iversen is based in Brooklyn, NY, and "On the Other Side" is her debut album in her own name:
"On the Other Side" is a refined musical statement showcasing her outstanding musical talent and artistic maturity. The music is modern, delicate jazz complete with lyrical melodious tunes, complex yet beautiful harmonies and elegant swinging rhythms - creating an emotionally saturated and empathetic atmosphere.
Anne Mette has created a unique and personal style by melding jazz and European classical music. Unlike most attempts at this, though, she allows both styles to keep their integrity and complement each other. Her string arrangements are an integral part of the songs, not mere "window dressing," while the jazz improvisations swing with true emotional intensity.
This CD has received stellar reviews and among these are the following:
Boris Rabinowitsch, Politiken, January 19, 2005:
“Every single time I hear this music, it leaves deep impressions in my soul. Whether the varying stylistic elements play alongside each other or work together in a perfect synthesis, the musicians always play and sing with nerve, depth and presence; making the music come across very convincingly and powerfully.
The compositions are in a musical language that occasionally approaches the atonal, and the arrangements for the string quartet are totally free from steroetypical “jazzy” influences. The pieces Reprise and Pokus #2 are, to my ears, extremely expressive contemporary classical music.”
Laurence Donohue-Greene, All About Jazz, New York, June 2004:
“I was extremely fascinated by the CD”
Thorbjørn Sjøgren, Jazz Special, February/March 2005:
“…Iversen’s own bass-playing, working seamlessly with Mark McLean’s drumming, is unquestionable yet supportive…”
“Recommended” Kjeld Frandsen, Berlingske Tidende, March 11, 2005:
“Music from the other side. Nowadays, in the rest of the world, female jazz musicians are no longer a rarity. It is not every day, though, that you find the type that can both play upright bass and compose and make a life in New York. But Anne Mette Iversen has since 1998 worked and lived in The Jazz Capital (New York). Last year she released “On the Other Side” where she fused a jazz musician’s universe with classical and traditional song and music…”
Guitarist, composer and arranger David O'Rourke writes:
" I hear in her work a very natural and effortless sounding feel for architecture in composition. At various times I heard her classical piano background reveal itself in the way she develops motifs, to be more precise, what I heard reminded me of composers from Bach through to Michel Legrand. I feel it's important for me to say that I don't speak or understand the Danish language, but despite this, I found myself mesmerized by the hypnotic sound of Anne Mette's musical tapestry in much the same way as I would a great 'foreign movie'."
