This album features seven newly composed Christmas songs and carols written by Janusz Supernak, organist and cantor at the Polish Catholic Mission in San Diego, California. Those original songs are mixed with a few most popular carols sung in Poland for centuries. Polish carols are very melodic, and they vary between joyful fast themes to nostalgic lullabies all expressing people's joy from the birth of little Jesus and hope for new, happy beginnings. Both the old tunes and the original ones are arranged on this album along some now, unconventional musical forms and rhythms, primarily as jazz pieces. The arrangements were done by Krzysztof Pajak from Cracow, Poland and his band recorded the instrumental score for the album. This album demonstrates a strong adherence to the Christmas traditions among the Polish nationals both in their homeland and around the world - and yet proposes a new, attractive presentations of the Polish traditional Christmas music with new exotic rhythms and harmonies.
This album won the First Prize at the International Multimedia Festival "Polish Homelands" in 2007, and the song "Why Won't You Stay" from that album was the First Prize winner at the International Festival in Niepokalanow in the Multimedia category in 2012. Some of the songs from this album have been featured on YouTube, gaining significant viewing and good reviews. In some cases English versions of those sings are presented on YouTube for an easy sing-along.
Although all but one of the songs are sung in Polish, it is easy to understand their message of joy, hope and love that are traditionally broadcast during the Christmas season. But they can be enjoyed year round, at any time to remind ourselves of the goodwill, peace and love our world so desperately needs today.
I hope you will enjoy this original version of the Polish carols. Happy listening!
