ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
JAYLENE JOHNSON-BIOGRAPHY

With a musical foundation is in Gospel and Jazz, Winnipeg-chanteuse Jaylene Johnson had planned on a debut CD of Jazz and Gospel standards. As she would soon find out, however, the path she planned would take her for some unexpected turns.

Winnipeg producer Lloyd Peterson fortuitously encouraged Johnson to write her own music. Johnson took on this challenge releasing “Not Forgotten” in 2000. Her song “Daughter” from that disc was awarded a Song of the Year award from the US Gospel Music Association in 2002. Johnson has had many supporters, but credits Peterson as the catalyst that set her on her path as a writer. Her sophomore album, “Finding Beautiful” went on to receive a Western Canadian Music Award nomination in 2004.

A near-fatal car collision while on tour veered Jaylene off her musical course for 2005. Thankfully the release she was touring had legs of its own. Critics weren’t the only ones taking notice of “Finding Beautiful”. Six songs from the record also received placements for television and DVD releases through Sony Music Television and NBC Universal. Johnson’s song “Butterfly Girl” was also acquired by the Canadian trio, Braided-formed by recent Canadian Idol finalists-for their debut CD.

In 2006, Johnson resurfaced with an even greater resolve and a conviction that continues to inform her music. This resolve took her to Canadian Music Week, where she met Ed Glinert of Casablanca Media Publishing. This chance encounter eventually led to a co-publishing deal as Casablanca’s first signed writer. Since then, Johnson has had the privilege of traveling to Toronto and Nashville to write with pros like Eddie Schwartz, Gerald O’Brien (Ole Publishing), Amy Sky, Simon Wilcox (EMI Publishing), Robbie Patterson (Peer Music Publishing) and Justin Gray (Joss Stone, Jacksoul and many more).

In addition to writing for others, Johnson has been pursuing her own artistry, touring with Cat Jahnke in fall of 2006, and touring solo in 2007, showcasing new material. She continues to create songs for a full-length release, and will be traveling to Vancouver, Los Angeles and Nashville in the next few months to co-write. New recordings will help her to further showcase her songs to Canada and beyond.

undeniably angelic pipes
Jaylene Johnson's messages and melodies are accessible enough to make Finding Beautiful enjoyable whatever your beliefs. The fact that her undeniably angelic pipes seem equally influenced by goddesses like Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan is no sin either.

Thoughtful, insightful, inspiring. Delivered in clear-as-crystal lyrics with mat
Such a variety of topics and styles in one collection! They say most Irish songs are sad - but they don't make you sad; they draw the sadness out of you. It's that way with some of Jaylene's songs. Others cheer you up. And some just help you to express happiness. A song for all seasons - that's Jaylene. Thanks, girl!

Will be a favorite CD for years to come
Finding Beautiful has a healing quality to it. The songs are as consoling as they are beautiful and thought-provoking. Jaylene's flawless voice reminds me of Nancy Griffith in the way she enunciates, with that quality of untampered sweetness, yet still able to reach down deep and express all that's in there. I wake up in the morning with one of these songs in my head and I know that Finding Beautiful will be a favorite of mine for years to come.

An album for the 21.cemtury
Jaylene Johnson combines the talent for beautiful "old fashioned" lyrical poetry with modern hypnotic melodies. Using elements of Trance music that goes straight to the heart of the listener. A great Album and a rare Talent in the music buisness this is an album for the 21.cemtury.

fantastically mellow but profound...not simple sycophancy to the divine
Canadian singer/songwriter Jaylene weighs in here with an album of devotion to God (as evidenced in the fantastically mellow but profound "Only Have My Love") and songs about the search for truth and meaning (the wonderful "Here And Now" which explores what Augustine of Hippo described as the longing for every human to connect with God). This is not an album of simple sycophancy to the divine, but rather, like Matt Redman a few CDs in, shows a mature Christian realising that the more she knows of God the less she knows. Even songs about death (the quite entrancing "Angels") are full of a reverent attitude to God and all things divine ("And I could almost hear the angels/As they sang their heavenly song/I could almost hear them saying/Welcome, welcome home"). Bottom line is this - if I'd been surfing websites looking for interesting music I'd probably have passed this one by. And that would have been the biggest mistake of my summer.
