ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
John Ferrara is a jazz pianist, arranger, and composer who has toured with and arranged for the Buddy Rich Band. He has performed with Joe Williams, Chico Hamilton, Philly Joe Jones, Clark Terry, George Mraz, Lou Soloff, Paquito Di'Rivera, Lou Tabackin, Al Cohn, Suzanne Somers, Hal Crook, Al Grey, Jack Wilkins, and Nelson Riddle among others. Some of these performances (with Philly Joe, Chico, George Mraz, Joe Williams) were at the famed jazz club north of Boston - Lennie's-on-the-Turnpike where he played with touring players back in the 1960's as the house pianist. He recently recorded with the Carmen Leggio quartet. He is a former instructor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (1978-81). He has also written two jazz piano instruction books (fundamental and advanced) which are widely available.
In addition to the piano parts on this session, Ferrara has overdubbed the bass and string parts as well. The selections include a cross section of American standards from composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Cole Porter, and Henry Mancini, as well as several originals.

An absolutely stunning recording!
What a revelation this CD is! John Ferrara is a major talent, and Intervals of Light ranks with the finest recordings in the long history of jazz piano. Mr Ferrara has chops but this is no mere display of musical athleticism. His prodigious technique is always put in the service of musical elegance, sensitivity, and swing. No one who loves jazz piano should be without this gorgeous collection of ballads, bossas, and burners!
