ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The new Semshae-Heart Songs album is comprised of contemporary and traditional Tibetan songs composed especially to help children learn some basic vocabulary of the Tibetan language. The songs teach the Tibetan numbers, colors, days of the week, and seasons, and convey cultural information about daily chores, visiting a temple, gardens, musical instruments, and peace. The CD notes provide the song lyrics in Tibetan script, phonetic Tibetan, and English translation, so children of any cultural background can sing along. The primary goal of this charming album is to ensure that Tibet's language and culture of compassion are preserved through children's music for all ages.

Semshae-Heart Songs is a welcome addition to the small library of Tibetan music for the Tibetans and international communities who are interested in Tibet and Tibetan culture. Exposing non-Tibetan children to the language and culture of a nation whose spiritual belief system emphasizes the happiness and well being of each human can be of benefit to today’s computer/cell phone-driven generation. This is the first album of its kind produced professionally in the West or anywhere in the Tibetan exile community.

Many individuals are aware of Tibetan Buddhism’s culture of compassion and nonviolence, but they may not be aware that the continued existence of Tibetan culture is seriously threatened. Through music, Semshae – a non-political, privately funded project— contributes to the preservation of a part of Tibet’s culture and its dissemination around the world.

" can’t stop listening to the recording"
The songs are simple tunes that can help a child (or sometimes-adult, like me) learn to count in the Tibetan language, or learn Tibetan words for the seasons of the year. There is a song about peace, and another about the beautiful mountains and landscape in Tibet. The melodies are sweet and I for one can’t stop listening to the recording. I play the CD over and over again.

My friends in the Seattle-area Tibetan community recently hosted a CD release party for the recording artist, Jhola (also known as Techung,) whose new album, Semshae (“Heart Songs”) is the musician’s effort to support and help sustain Tibetan culture. The local Tibetan children sang along with Jhola at the party, and the innocent little voices enchanted all of us in the audience.

Here’s a link to a video about Jhola’s CD project. I encourage you to give it a listen:

wonderful music
thank you for coming to Seattle and sharing your wonderful music.I must say my kids love the music, they were listening in the car while I was driving home and demanded to play it over again and again! I'm sure this is same experience with many parents, which is wonderful for us who are always looking for ways to keep our kids interest in Tibetan culture and music. So big thank you and thuk-je-nang for this wonderful gift to all of us!

Wishing you best...

Sing Along to SEMSHAE, Have Fun, and Learn Tibetan!
Listening to SEMSHAE is such a fun and wonderful way to learn the Tibetan language. The cd is filled with beautiful music and singing by Jhola and the singing of Tibetan children. My children and I listen to the cd over and over again and enjoy it every time. The lyrics in the little booklet that comes with the cd are written in the Tibetan language, phonetically in English, and translated into English. As an avid learner of languages, I think the best way to learn a new language is by learning songs and singing them over and over again; the language becomes a part of your heart, mind, and soul. An example of a few delightful lines from the song, "Out in The Garden," are "There is a sweet singing bird./ Oh the red bird, oh the red bird,/ Come to my garden, come to my garden." Covering the Tibetan consonants and vowels, numbers, days of the week, seasons, animals and nature, colors, and other essential words, SEMSHAE-HEART SONGS is a Tibetan language learner's dream come true! Thank you, Jhola, for keeping an ancient and magnificent language alive!

absolutely loving it!
Hi Tashi

We are writing first to congratulate and thank you for this fantastic CD. Our three children who are growing up in Australia and speak very little Tibetan are absolutely loving it and so are we. Although we only downloaded it a week ago - they are already singing along to many songs and on a recent weekend away it was the most requested CD of all! Even our youngest who is not quite two is singing along and I know all this singing along is not only fun but is already increasing the vocabulary of all three children. So thanks for the work - and we look forward to more from Semshae in the future.

Thanks again, and looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,
Linda and Tenzin Lodue

Listening Joy for All Ages
My 6 year old daughter's obsession with this cd drew even my culturally straight-arrow mother into the joy and exuberance of these lively songs. Everyone in my family enjoys singing along (despite not knowing the language) and I especially enjoy that the songs have some musical depth which adults can appreciate. While some children's cds can feel syrupy sweet, this cd offers musical nuance with phrases kids can easily remember. A great way to expose children (and even adults) to another culture!

It's a beautiful CD
It's a beautiful CD.. I listened to it constantly for a long time and will continue to return to it. It's also a fun way to pick up some Tibetan if you're trying to learn the language (colors, numbers, etc.)..
