A clash of cultures, between Arabic musical & rhythmic idioms and Western electronic music, Ishtebak is the evolution in the music & dance of Jim Boz. Combining dance beats, moody samples and found sounds with a sampling of the flavours of the Middle East into an original mix of organic and electronic.
Jim Boz is a music & dance artist based in San Diego, CA, USA & Toronto, ON, Canada. Since his first song appeared on the radio on a small Berkeley station in 1984, his life has been involved in one aspect or another in the creative arts. Working professionally as a musician in the late 80's & through the 90's, his career expanded to include the world of dance. Since then, Jim has created several resources for dance instructors using his skills as an electronic musician and producer.
Taking a further turn down that road takes us to this place, only to dally for a bit, until the next chapter begins.
Although Jim's background since 1994 has been in the Middle Eastern Dance industry, this music is not necessarily appropriate 'belly dance' music for traditional audiences since the Arabic influences have been taken out of musical context. These tracks are more suited for American Glam & fusion belly dance. Your mileage may vary.
On a personal note: I wrote this music without any regard to its marketability, danceability or presentability in any dance or musical context. This music is partly what I wish I had to dance to 10+ years ago and partly what I want to hear now. It is what moves the shapes & colours in my head between the influences of movement & sound over the years. As I've said about the nature of dance, and art in general: it is inside you, it smoulders & it needs to come out. Here it is.
Thanks to Miki Bow of Huntsville, AL, who is the inspiration for one of my first mixtures of Arabic rhythm, moody samples & a trip hop beat for the track "Mikis Trip". Find her on Facebook at facebook.com/miki.bow
Thanks to "Invoke the Goddess Designs" for one of my absolute favourite costumes! She is the inspiration behind "Invoke the Goddess"...smouldering, elegant, with plenty of sparkle and depth...and shiny crystals! www.InvokeTheGoddessDesigns.com
Thanks to Brittney 'Miss Bee' Banaei for the inspiration and feedback to create "Miss Bee's Dubstep". I had the pleasure of seeing her perform to it as I mixed live while DJ'ing in Missouri. You are AWESOME! www.MissBeeBellydance.com
Thanks to Jemina for translations of the samples on "Maghrebi Echo" and "Bithab Tarqus". www.facebook.com/jemina.shikany
