"ON A STRING is a winning collection of 10 songs that strike a balance between rootsy charm and finely honed craft." ---San Diego UNION-TRIBUNE Arts
"Making ON A STRING was an entirely new experience, very different from my first album--on that one I had been obsessed with doing everything by myself," says Joanie Mendenhall of her homemade 2004 debut. "But after spending time immersed in this community and hanging around some really talented people, it was a joy to collaborate with others in making ON A STRING!"
Co-producer and engineer Ben Moore (Hot Snakes, The Night Marchers, Rob Crow, Switchfoot) brought Joanie's new songs to a whole new plane with impeccable production standards, while multi-instrumentalists T.S. Ward and Ray Suen (The Killers, Louis xiv) helped Joanie flesh out the arrangements and create the lush and unpredictable sound of ON A STRING.
Like on her first album, Joanie again moonlights on several different instruments (piano, guitar, bass, and vibraphone), while Ward and Suen shine brightly on drums, upright bass, violin, and guitar.
The songs range in subject matter and moods, but as a whole they explore the art of growing into yourself and finding ways to make the past harmonious with the present. "Total Wreck" hails letting go of things no matter how badly you want them. "Cakewalk" observes a younger person stumbling through those awkward years, emerging a little scathed, but all the better for it. "Metal Box" observes a loved one trying to run away from the discomfort of mistakes. "Nocturne" explores the limitations of language in the face of tragedy. And "That Old Blackbird" looks back on the past while realizing that things are okay in spite of it.
Joanie is also a key member in the garage pop group The Exfriends, as well as a frequent collaborator with progressive alternative rockers Years Around the Sun, and LA indie pop songstress Correatown (Angela Correa), with whom Joanie started The Low Standards, a devious, jazzy little side project.
