Raised in Milwaukee and baptized by the San Francisco Bay Area, Joel A. Brown has been writing since the age of 7, but did not consider it his calling unitl the age of 17. Joel approaches his craft from a spiritual perspective. He describes his poetry and music as "sexy-hot, spiritually-manical, and real to da bone."
His latest CD, "The S.E.X.Y. Shade of C.O.O.L.," is equal parts seductive, smoky, sultry, irreverent, and a bit dangerous. While incorporating the smoldering sounds of ghetto metal, neo-soul, Afro-Cuban funk, jazz, Latin swing, and ole skool hip-hop, the CD is seemless and avant-garde. In truth, there is no father to his style. For the conscious mind, it is distilled truth. For the ardent listener, it is the testimony of a muse having fun. For an open heart...it is a wonderfully transformative journey.
Joel articulates his progressive sensibilities with a raw edge and musical fervor that is compelling and unassailable. It is too easy to dismiss his art as urban or black or spiritual or gay. If you appreciated music when it stood for something and spoke to truth...suspend your judgment and open your heart. If you appreciated music when it didn't sound like it was created overnight...pay attention and indulge. And if you appreciated music when it forced you to stop and listen, explore this artist feverishly. He is a rising force to be reckoned with.
