Nathanial Adams Coles, also known as Nat King Cole was not onle one of the most influential male vocalists of the 20th century, he was also an amazingly inovative jazz pianist in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s.
Moreover, while Nat King Cole and his Trio were painstakingly making their way into American mainstream radio in the early 1940’s ---a young Ray Charles had already taken notice and was clearly inspired by Nat’s novel interpretations of the classic standards of the day.
Ray Charles's early recordings clearly capture some of the essence of this easy, swingin’ jazz style while at the same time integrating the “blues” and what would later become known as “soul”.
With a musical line-up that includes vocalist Joey Green (USA), jazz pianist/composer Geri Schuller (Austria), bassist Gina Schwarz, (Austria) and guitarist Roland Stonek (Austria). In a live performance recorded for national radio on January 18th, 2013 in Vienna, Austria, the Joey Green Quartett explores the early music of these two giants of the 20th Century---Nat King Cole and Ray Charles.
