Born in 1962 in Avesta, Sweden, Johan Blohm grew up as a young child, listening to his Father’s rock ‘n roll and country music records. When he was six years old, his grandfather gave the family an upright piano. Johan, even at six was inspired to start playing on that piano and the first song he learned was Jerry Lee Lewis’s version of “Green, Green Grass of Home”. Initially he started playing with one finger but soon there after learned to play with both hands.
At about 12 years of age, Johan formed his first band with some of his buddies…and started playing their favorite rock ’n roll and country music songs at school parties, As Johan continued through high school, his musical influences were US rock n’ roll and country music greats like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Carl Mann, Gram Parsons and Leon Redbone.
Following high school, Johan worked a full time job and performed as a solo artist on weekends, supported by a core of strong back up musicians. When Johan was around 20 years old, Joe Allan, a local Radio Host and legendary rockabilly promoter heard a recording of Johan playing and invited him to be on his radio show.
Following Johan’s appearance on Joe Allan’s radio show, Johan’s reputation as a “great” piano player evolved. He was asked, and then requested, to be the piano player for many of the touring American rock n’ roll and country music acts performing throughout Sweden. Johan worked with music greats i.e. Sleepy LaBeef, D. J. Fontana, Steve Haggard, Paul Burlison, Ray Sharpe, Hayden Thompson, Al Ferrier and Stan Kessler.
In the spring of 1999 Johan decided to follow his musical career, leaving his regular job…..and making a full time commitment to his music. Shortly thereafter, Johan was contacted by Joakim Arnell of “The Refreshments”, Sweden’s award winning (Gold and Platin) rock 'n' roll band.
Joakim had heard a few of Johan’s recordings and was “absolutely amazed” by what he heard. The Refreshments contacted Johan and asked him to sit in on a couple of gigs, which he did. And the rest is history - Johan has been a regular member of “The Refreshments” for 10 years. He is the bands “boogie piano maestro” as well as a performing vocal artist…. and has made a significant musical contribution as the 5th member of this band. (Last 12 albums have all sold gold)
After several years as a member of “The Refreshment’s, Johan felt the desire to perform as a solo artist again. He developed a new “Johan Blohm Band” and started performing his own shows, which he continues today. In 2005, Johan recorded and released his 1st solo album, “Reconsider Me”. Following a promotional tour with his band which included great reviews, radio interviews and national television appearances, Johan’s reputation continues to expand on an international basis.
Johan’s early interest in the bluesy jazz style known as”boogie-woogie” had him listening to the boogie-woogie greats, the likes of Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, Amos Milburn and Freddie Slack. Those artists influenced Johan’s artistic style of playing, whether he’s playing rock ’n roll, rockabilly or boogie-woogie. A few years ago, a clip of Johan playing “Blohm’s Boogie” was placed on the internet and since then there has been an overwhelming international response from boogie-woogie enthusiasts who want to learn more about his music and his performances. He has been cited as a “boogie-woogie master”, and one of the “greatest boogie-woogie players” in the world.
Johan considers himself a diverse piano player and vocalist, who is just as comfortable performing rock ‘n roll and country songs as well as creating and playing boogie-woogie. “Blohm’s Boogie” and “JB’s Boogie” being his most well known compositions.
Johan’s love of music and his desire to maintain a “current up to date sound and approach” to his music, while respecting the “older more traditional sounds” has his fans constantly asking….”When will you be releasing another album?” The answer – soon!
Johan and his back-up musicians, whether playing at Festivals, concerts or club settings always deliver an event filled with great music and happy people!
