"Kids Dig Jazz, Volume One" is the latest release by Vermont's most versatile musician, John Cassel of East Fairfield. This work is an experiment in diversity: kids singing like kids along with jazz musicians playing straight ahead. Two days after a session at West Street Digital accompanying seven year old Chloe Lemmel-May singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" Bobby Militello was on stage playing alto sax with Dave Brubeck. How diverse is that! The musical powerhouse of studio musicians on this CD include Bobby Militello on sax and flute, Dave Ellis on trumpet, George Voland on trombone, Rich Davidian on tenor sax, Paul Asbel, guitar, William Galison on chromatic harp, Will Patton on bass and Steve Weinert on drums and the delightful Re-Bop Singers!
The CD opens with "Charlie Brown's Theme"/"Do-Re-Mi" then switches gears with an original tune, "Swing" and its easy appealing lyrics, flute solo and perfect blend of children's voices.
John's unique style and clever musical arrangements are evident when listening to "Swinging On A Star" that smoothly showcases sax, trombone, and trumpets complimenting vocals by John and the Re-Bop Singers. The CD's final cut, "Hedwig's Theme" is a first of its kind arrangment of this intricate and haunting song that again features John's horn arrangements with an over-the-top solo by Bobby Militello on sax.
East Faifield artist, Marcia Brewster's artwork and Synchonicity Design's, Randy Smith, add the appealing essence of fun to the CD cover.
