ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The love for acoustic guitar really shines through on this collection of original instrumental compositions. This recording captures the natural sound of several beautiful acoustic instruments. The next best thing to live music, this collection invokes an intimate house concert setting.

John has had many great musical influences, which lie at the heart of his unique soothing sound. Versatile in both fingerstyle and flatpick styles, John has pulled together a fresh cohesive set of instrumentals; bound to please fans of the acoustic guitar. Over 40 minutes of music.

Enjoy!

Mix of instrumental acoustic guitar pieces, all with heart and soul. Well writte
Acoustic Rough Sketches, John Cooper's initial offering, is hopefully just the first of many to come. This CD is a collection of songs that I would consider a moderately eclectic mix of acoustic instrumental guitar pieces. Not so eclectic that it breaks the cohesiveness of the songs on the CD, but not so similar as to sound like rubber-stamped "formula" pieces, a trap many musicians fall into.

There is a remarkable lack of post-processing (compression, reverb, etc.), which provides a wonderful naked and pure acoustic guitar sound. If you are one of those people that love the sound of a good acoustic guitar - like me - you'll really appreciate how well John's guitars are captured.

I have always admired artists in any medium that could trigger strong emotional responses with a small splash of color, a wisp of a line, or a handful of notes - a minimalist approach. John has written a number of pieces that embrace a minimalist aesthetic without sounding thin or under-produced. John has a wonderful "gut feel" for melody lines, and allows his melody lines to guide, rather than push, your ears along on the journey. I am reminded at times of Eric Tingstad's CD "A Sense Of Place", as John vividly describes his surroundings and mood through his music. It is only as I write these words that I realize that with this mix of tunes, John succeeded at getting my toes tapping and my body moving, as well as opening that mental/spiritual door that lets my spirit soar with the music. I think that is quite an accomplishment!

I wholeheartedly recommend Acoustic Rough Sketches Volume 1 for anyone that loves to hear an acoustic guitar played well, and who wants to be touched by some wonderful compositions.

Acoustic Rough Sketches I
As a working musician and guitar maker, I bring to the table a decent mix of ability and high expectations: When it comes to evaluating player-composers, I don’t admitting that I’m a snob...
That said, Acoustic Rough Sketches is quite simply a must-have disc for lovers of fingerstyle guitar. This disc exceeded all my expectations, and you’ll want it in your collection.
Cooper reveals wonderful technique and notable talent in his compositions. His style and taste come through clearly, in a manner that absolutely feeds one’s listening desires. Cooper’s influences are notable in their origins, but he does not merely cop licks or genres; his style is his own, and it is a very pleasant one indeed.
Truly fine playing is evocative, and Cooper falls into this genre: While fingerstyle players who truly stand out are rare to my ear, he most certainly does:
St. Francis said, “Preach the Gospel always, and if necessary, use words;” Cooper is preaching fingerstyle gospel on this disc, and the messages and images come through loud and clear. Just as Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel have made glorious careers of evocative acoustic music, John Cooper is not far behind.

Acoustic Rough Sketches 1
As a singer/songwriter, I enjoy a good blend of guitar & voice. I often find that many instrumental CD's don't hold my attention for more than three or four songs. John Cooper's 'Acoustic Rough Sketches 1' is different. John's playing is among the best of finger-style (in my opinion). His arrangements are so easy to listen to, and so comfortable. Breezin', the first on the playlist, sets up the whole CD. It's like a breath of fresh air. Find yourself a comfy chair and a set of earphones and travel to the land of blissful sound. Great job John - love your sound(s).

Instrumental Acoustic Guitar at its best!!
Like most other creative processes, song writing is a most rewarding and satisfying endeavor. Sometimes the songwriter starts by creating the melody and then finds the words to tell the story. Others prefer to write the words first and then blend in the music to fit.. A few build the story and music together.

Then there are the others that have the unique ability of telling a story without words - just notes on a scale processed and massaged is such a way that the inner sole is moved and the heart is no longer the same.. It has been affected and changed forever.

John Cooper has that ability. Acoustic Rough Sketches - Volume 1 is instrumental acoustic guitar at its best. Eighteen songs that will transport you to restful places, fill the canvas of your mind, inspire and leave you satisfied. The only thing that will be lacking is Volume – 2.

Thank you John. Well done.
