Album Notes
"The Joy of Living" is an addiction recovery lecture by John MacDougall. John is the Director of Spiritual Guidance, and the most popular lecturer in the patient lecture series at Hazelden, the world-famous addiction treatment center in Center City, Minnesota. John is a recovering alcoholic and addict, sober since 1989. John speaks at professional and A.A. events throughout the country, and internationally.

The lecture "A Fit Spiritual Condition" is based on a statement in the "Big Book" of Alcoholics Anonymous, that we are not cured, but that we have a daily reprieve, based on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. John discusses what it takes to maintain our spiritual condition so that we are spiritually fit enough to maintain sobriety.

John discusses why relapse is a normal condition in addiction, as it is in any chronic illness. This natural tendency towards relapse is why an active program of spiritual recovery is needed on a daily basis, as relapse prevention, and to see that life keeps getting better. John gives specific, practical things we can do, and spiritual beliefs and attitudes we can adopt, that keep us hopeful, grateful, and sober. In the lecture, John also describes a spiritual principle that matches each of the Twelve Steps, and talks about how we can put that principle into practice every day.

This lecture is part of a series of recovery lectures, full of hope and humor from John MacDougall. It is one hour and seven minutes long.
