Hello! Thanks for stopping by. My name is Johnny McGillis. I’m a classically trained singer. For the past few years I have been performing cabaret at a number of clubs in Toronto. I love cabaret, because it gives me the freedom to sing anything I want – from pop to music theatre to jazz to classical. In more recent shows, I have also experimented with character. I’ve been singing in drag as the flirtatious and fetching, Charo-inspired Chilean Juanita Pancettas. That has been fantastic for me, as I get to experiment with the character, create outlandish stories. The audience feedback has been terrific.
My pianist, Marty Smyth, and I are now happy to release a new CD. In the first half, I’ll be singing some ballads by artists like Elton John and Billy Joel and some cabaret favourites by Kooman and Diamond and John Bucchino, to name a few. In the second half of the CD, Juanita will sing some of her audience favourites. Songs like Tisket Tasket, Boy From Ipanema, and Ring My Bell.
We’re excited to work with some fabulous musicians on the CD (featuring drums by Colin Kingsmore, and several tracks featuring a complete big band, the GTA Swing Band). The disc was mostly recorded at recorded at Fifth Wall Studios in Toronto, with the GTA Swing Band tracks recorded live at Lula Lounge in Toronto, Canada. We’re very excited to have two new arrangements, Killing Me Softly and Against All Odds, remixed by Toronto’s AM.
