As a past member of The Drifters and the Inkspots, his touring with these legendary groups allowed him to meet various producers and songwriters who were interested in signing Johnny to solo ventures.
Johnny's big hit Loop De Loop was released in the summer of 1963 and sold over one million copies, setting him on the road for a long and continuing career.
Johnny Thunder came from his home state of Florida to New York City in the early 1960's with singing on his mind. Almost immediately he was befriended by soul singer great Jackie Wilson who greatly admired Johnny’s talent. He quickly arranged for Johnny to audition for the roll of blues singer in the Apollo theatre production of "A Blind Man Sings the Blues".
Although Johnny did not consider himself as a blues singer, he was awarded the part, over many, many, other hopefuls and he joined the cast, which included Odetta and the Harry Belafonte Singers!
Johnny then moved into the position of lead vocalist for the Drifters. After touring with them for months... lightning struck! Loop de Loop became Johnny’s first. international hit record. This was followed up by Johnny’s other hits, which include I’m Alive, Everybody do the Sloopy, You Send Me and the Rosydance. A great influence on Johnny's life was Teddy Vann. Please take a moment to read the heartfelt tribute to a wonderful man, without who's help and guidance we might have never heard the name "Johnny Thunder." Click here to read.
Johnny has toured with greats such as Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, Jackie Wilson, Jerry Butler, Herman’s' Hermits, Patti Labelle, Diana Ross and the Supremes and Jimi Hendrix, to name a few.
