Jolie will twist you up into her warm voice only to leave you falling onto a bed of sparse music and sleepy lyrics. Fall softly.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Artist: Joyce Bowden
cd title: jolei
label: Moon Caravan www.mooncaravan.com

The inspiration for most of the jolei work came from late cellist and friend Arthur Russell. (see: www.audikarecords.com, www.soundsoftheuniverse.com, www.roughtrade.com, www.jahsonic.com/ArthurRussell.html). I always think of how Arthur would have played his cello with the songs on this cd, and I\'m pretty sure he was in the room as they were being recorded. It was recorded at Circle Sound in North Carolina. There were states of conscious and subconscious love that found their way into the sonic landscape built by producer and bass player Rick Lassiter.

Arthur was a big influence and was a wholly wonderful sweet soul, fiercely stalwart in his originality and musical integrity. I think he would intend it to be the seed that enters your soul on your way back home.

Hi. This is me. For awhile in the early nineties I was in a band with Joey Ramone called the Resistance. For awhile I didn\'t think there were any recordings of the band, but I think there\'s a clip of the band at a Jerry Brown rally in 1992 on YouTube now. We were best friends for awhile. Joey was a musical and comedic genius, and had a really original mind.
It was a lot of fun being a back-up singer with the Casual Gods, which was Jerry Harrison\'s solo group with Ernie Brooks. I enjoyed being around such amazing musicians, also Bernie Worrell, Chris Spedding, David Byrne and Chris and Tina of the Tom Tom Club (www.briansdiscographies.com/heads/uo.html) (www.tomtomclub.com/history.html) and . (www.connollyco.com/discography/jerry_harrison/walk.ht) Gabrielle Roth,(www.emusic.com/album/10585/10585578.html)In North Carolina I got to do some stuff with Steven Ineson, Lee Kirby, and the Milagro Saints(www.milagrosaints.com), and the Jack Frost Nippers with Mahlon Hoard, Dana Chell and Rick Lassiter.

All the musicians who put their time and ideas into the jolei cd are amazing, and I feel really grateful to them, and of course to my friend Rick Lassiter (www.ricklassiter.com), who is responsible for the way this cd sounds.

Thank for visiting. I wish you the best of everything on your own journey here.

What a lovely voice and beautiful production: JOLEI is a find.
I inadvertently discovered JOLEI by Joyce Bowden by way of Milagro Saints, a folk-rock group on which Joyce sings and plays. Anyway the group's SOUL SONG was what I heard on the independent radio station I listen to early this morning and it captured my attention. This led me on my journey to JOLEI--beautiful, lyrical, peaceful and thoughtful. In this day and age, this is a rare find, indeed.

jolei's voice inspires me to yell at the musicians, rather than learn to count off my own song. imagine my catharsis!

Jolei's simply the most peaceful and beautiful music I've ever heard.
Wow. Jolei: jolei turned me on from the first song and didn't put me down until way after the cd was over. I feel like I've made a new friend. Something about her songs feels really familiar, but like something I've never heard before, too. I love that song 'Heartbreak Feelin'.

Soft and sweet
I am fairly new to folk music, but I absolutely love this album. I find myself listening to Jolei all the time...reading, driving, studying, dining...there is never a bad time to listen to this album. It leaves you relaxed and feeling more willing to face the world again, even after the hardest day. I'm looking forward to more of her work!

A tender pillow of Carolina comfort
Oh, Oh, Oh, as soon as this disc started I floated down to the meadow from the cover, laid my head in her lap and fell into the gorgeous music. An amazingly consistent album without being boring. I was depressed when it ended. Is she married? If not I am coming to Carolina....Great Disc.

An absolute treat! Go buy this now, don’t even bother reading the review.
An absolute treat! Go buy this now, don’t even bother reading the review.

Never mind about the fact that it the CD ‘came about from states of conscious and subconscious love, inspired by working with the late cellist Arthur Russell’. All you need to know is that this is a collection of remarkable songs sung by a remarkable singer.

Jolei has an interesting history having been in a band with Joey Ramone as well as working as a back-up singer and working with the likes of Bernie Worrell, Chris Spedding, David Byrne and Chris and Tina Weymouth of the Tom Tom Club.

There is a sophistication and melancholic shroud having over the music that subtly drags you into the nuances of the sound and the songs. If you only listen to one track to get the feel, make it “Heartbreak Feelin'”, one of the best songs I’ve heard in ages.

Each new listen brings fresh textures to the songs that you missed the previous time, and it is that most unusual of beasts, a record that just keeps on getting better. Jolei doesn’t really sound like anyone else, which is unusual in these days of musical overload.

This music puts me in the right place.
This cd sooths me out. I come from a very noisy world, and when I put this on , I'm immediately taken to a deep quiet place. I couldn't do without it now that I've found it. It's in the top ten cd's I've heard in my life.

this haunting and gentle collection stands up to many listenings--there is a freedom from the tyranny of the beat and poppy cliches--the singer has an amazing voice with a wide range of colors and textures from little girl whisper to sultry blue vamp but always tasetfully within the borders of this "dark country"

I put this on and I .
This is an authentic female voice. I really needed to hear these songs because I'm a painter, and I've been painting some of the best paintings I've ever done while listening to it.
