Album Notes
The Jonathan Bass Quintet is a modern jazz ensemble with influences spanning from A to Zappa, but with an emphasis on creating, performing, and recording original material. The quintet is currently operating in Chicago. Each member has a very different approach to the music which is welcomed by all in the ensemble. Very simply put, they care about making music.
\"Shapes and Colors\" has a variety of work on it. From its through-composed Prelude and Interlude to its freely improvised The Other Shoe and Sole, and the modern yet traditional forms of the rest of the tracks this album has something for all instrumental listeners. The melodies and textures are deliberate, singable, and presented with wonderful individual personality from each musician. Enjoy this album.

This is one of those cds that is a must have in your jazz collection. The music on this cd captures the true nature of jazz with songs ranging from pure improvisation , to beautiful melodic melodies and funk that is a cross between Thelonious Monk and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Now that's Jazz.
