ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The music of Federico Mompou sets the artistic direction of this trumpet (Jordan McLean), cello (Patrick Petty) and piano (Derin Oge) based group. Music of the 12th century Troubadours, Siberian folk songs, Charles Ives, Samuel Barber and Mr. McLean's original work round out the groups' repertoire.

Performances include concerts at John Zorn's Stone, The Anthroposophical Society of New York and Renaissant Arts' SoHo Salon.

Bio, Jordan McLean

Charter member, lead trumpet, featured soloist and contributing composer, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra; founding memeber, Fire of Space, Piano Music and Song Trio, DROID and East Coast Duo; featured solo and ensemble work with Bill T. Jones, Angelique Kidjo, Medeski Martin and Wood, TV on the Radio, Gomez, Cyro Baptista, Butch Morris, The Sway Machinery, Blue Note and ANTI Records and countless other NYC based and international musical personalities. This work includes trips to 20 countries and 40 U.S. states for dozens of major jazz, rock, world music, and cultural festivals over the last decade.

Other developments include graduating suma cum laude in classical composition at SUNY Purchase (2006) under the guidance of compositional luminaries Dary John Mizelle and Joel Thome and theory guru Robert Fertitta. In 2006 Jordan was one of 6 ArtsBridge America Scholars, developing “Ethnomusicology Radio”, a studio recording project for Westchester junior high school students. There have also been theory, orchestration and performance studies at the Manhattan School of Music pre-college (1991/92), the Mannes College of Music (1992-95), Brooklyn College (2002), and the Julliard School (2003).

Jordan is also a music educator, working as an artist-in-residence in NYC public schools for LEAP (Learning through an Expanded Arts Program) for the last 8 years. Responsibilities include presenting student concerts and developing “Understanding Culture Through Music”, a 10 to 15 week workshop for grade school music and social studies curriculum.

Jordan has recently completed a studio recording of concert works including pieces for solo piano, solo voice and cello, percussion quartet and Seeking Celestial Frequencies, his second string quartet. Completed works slated for recording include a single movement piece for flute, cello and piano; a parlor piece for mezzo-soprano and strings (to be sung in English, French, and Farsi); a multi-movement “lament” for brass trio and electronics; a solo cello piece; and a multi-movement work originally composed for a large ensemble dance piece with an ensemble of piano four hands, cello and contra-bass. Most recently completed works include 5 Variations on a cantus from Guillaume de Machaut for trumpet and organ, and Astro Chemical Radiation for solo trumpet and electronics. Orchestrations of Mompou, Ives, Barber and Siberian folk music set the tone for the Piano Music Trio (trumpet, cello and piano), who have been performing in art galleries and arts “salons” and preparing to record in January. Other recent duties include assistant conducting with Orchestra of Our Time, and musical direction for play readings with Soho-based Renaissant Arts. His work has most recently been included In Vox Novus’ 60x60 new music series.

His work in electro-acoustic music spans the last 10 years, recording, performing with and composing for DROID (featuring members of Miles Davis’ and Gil Evans’ late ensembles) and the East Coast Duo (trumpet and electronics/theremin, electric bass and electronics).

Jordan's first release as a leader, Fire of Space's Handbasket, on 482 music, was released Sept. 5th, 2006
