ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
CD description (English and Spanish):

"Cuando la bomba te llama" is a unique educational CD that provides practice tracks for seasoned as well as beginner bomba dancers and musicians. The first 5 tracks are 5 full minutes of 5 basic bomba rhythms: sicá, cuembé, holandé, yubá and seis corrido. Those tracks provide great practice opportunity for dancers, singers, composers and primo/subidor players. The next 15 tracks feature what CD producer/percussionist Jorge Vázquez calls the "bomba minus 1" method, where the buleador, cuá or maraca is absent so that people can practice one of those instruments while having the support of the rest of the bomba ensemble. This CD is a much-needed contribution toward strengthening bomba and nurturing the next generation of bomberos and bomberas.

Quotes (English and Spanish):

"I thank you for promoting our culture. I hope this CD travels the world."
José "Chema" Soto, founder of Centro Cultural Rincón Criollo (La Casita de Chema)

"This CD is appropriate, concrete and clear and serves all those interested in learning the basics of Puerto Rican bomba. I think you are developing here a method so that an individual can play along with the recording so that he or she can internalize and appropriate these rhythms. It is very good."
Juan Gutiérrez, director of Los Pleneros de la 21

"It's a pleasue that one of my 'kids' has achieved something like this
for the whole world and so that our youth learns and keeps cultivating
their roots and their culture."
Roberto Cepeda Brenes , member of the Cepeda family

A phenomenal tool
I got the CD when it first released. Immediately I listened and initially was impressed by the quality of the recording. I continued to use it as a tool to practice as a part of my practice sessions and became very aware of the consideration given to such details as the timing and consideration of what purpose would this serve a practitioner, beginner, dancer or percussionist. It forces you to be aware of the raw elements within the basic music structures of each rhythm. It is helping me to be clearer and more precise with each note and the time it is played in! Its the metronome of Bomba! This CD is ground breaking because it serves such a wide array of purposes for anyone interested in practicing this tradition on a daily basis. It is meant to serve as a tool in addition to your education, and growth within the tradition! Bomba has come in to the modern age with this CD. Fabulous work! Kudos Jorge V!

Cuando la Bomba Te Llama, Vol. 1 by Jorge Vazquez.
The CD is an erudite compilation that will give the listener an easy learning experience into the multivariate forms of Puerto Rican Bomba, an Afro-Rican music and dance, that transcends the test of time. To be enjoyed by novice and learned musician, it explores Sica`, Rule`, Cuembe`, Yuba`, and Seis Corrido, rhythms that personify Puerto Rican Bomba. The CD introduces the rhythms and then allows the listener to practice them, giving you a total feel for the music. It's sure to introduce, this highly esteemed musical form, to the younger audience not normally exposed to it's melodic essence. It will leaving saying, "Bomba-E!"

A manuel for future Bomberos
This album I promise you will go down as a classic for the genre of La Bomba and for Latin percussion in general. Jorge Vazquez carefully and precisely lays out each of the 5 basic rhythms of La Bomba (they are listed in 1st 5 tracks of the record), but he does not stop there he then presents you with 3 more tracks for each rhythm pattern minus one of the core instruments (maraca, cua and buleador). Allowing you can step in and play along where the missing instrument would be playing. Its this kind of thoughtfulness and attention to detail that make this album a must have . So far I have used his tracks to brush up on cuembe, sica and yoba. I'm currently using the album to help me learn the holande rhythm and I also use it to play along with a maraca. Its the perfect record for Bomba drummers of all levels, again a classic

A great instructional CD for an undervalued genre
This CD is an invaluable resource for all percussionists out there. Bomba, an Afro-Latin genre from Puerto Rico, has always been poorly documented, a distant cousin to more popular Salsa rhythms. Vazquez here outlines the major rhythms, as well as provides some history and context through audio interviews. Vazquez has made his name playing around New York with many bands, most notably Bryan Vargas & Ya Está - whose music is also well worth seeking out. Anyone interested in learning how this music works should invest in this wonderful CD.
