ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Joel Plaskett’s latest Emergency release, Ashtray Rock (released April 17, 2007) is a concept album about two young rockers caught in a band-fracturing love triangle. It's easily the best thing Plaskett's ever done, as well as one of the most ambitiously executed Can-rock records in years. On their own, the songs are superb. In first single "Snowed In/Cruisin'" and "The Instrumental," Plaskett brilliantly reclaims the riff-rock he'd seemingly forgotten in his solo years. The Mamas And The Papas tease of "Nothing More To Say" is ensnaring, and "Fashionable People" is like an anti-Bowie response track plucked from the past. Best, though, is that beyond being excellent songs on their own, they all work towards the greater story, which you'll be busy listening to over and over in order to uncover the subtle details. As anyone familiar with this artist will tell you, "it's only a matter of time."

I disaqree totally with the review by "bill". I found Joel's music after seeing the video to "Fashionable People" (which was hilarious, stylish, and great)on youtube. I bought Ashtray Rock on a whim, wanting to hear what else was on the album. I was intrigued by the idea of a concept album- and was pleasantly surprised. Not all of the songs are tunes that I want to hear all the time, but all have great moments- and I dug the story- a girl comes between two friends in a band. The artwork was cool and understated (not to mention, nice to see some actual artwork) And back to Joel's style- Petty meets Elvis Costello with maybe some Talking Heads thrown in, it's a unique sound. CD Baby is a great service for getting lesser known musicians out to the public. I have already recommended the cd to a bunch of people.

Favorite- Drunk Teenagers.

Album lacks the emotional power of Mr. Plaskett's live performance. Quality of sound, deliberate or not, doesn't do justice to the artist's talent. Minor point: art work on album is amateurish. This being said, I think Mr. Plaskett is both bright and talented; an energetic rebuttal to the banality of much music produced today. I look forward to the next album and the one beyond that.
