ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
What good is a country-inspired album without a few bum-on-your-luck tales about how it got made? Without really intending on it, singer-songwriter J.W. Carlson set himself on a long, hard road to finish his first proper LP, the folk-country-rock effort dubbed American Brass. Since first setting out to write and record the album a few years ago, Carlson found himself battling unforeseen health issues, including a couple of collapsed lungs, blown vocal chords, and more than a few line-up changes in his live band to boot. They were challenging years, but through pure passion and head-strong perseverance, and with plenty of support from family, friends, and new band mates, Carlson is finally able to prove just what American Brass means.

A longtime regional favorite in Toledo, OH, Carlson (sometimes known as JWC) has been rocking the local circuit for more than a decade, playing countless acclaimed live shows, earning spins on the likes of 89X (a Detroit radio station), and garnering attention from area press, critics, and promoters. His strong voice, genuine delivery, high-energy live shows, and his distinctly familiar yet original style of writing and arranging all are a testament to the tradition of American roots music, all wrapped up with a modern edge that’s alternately sweet, daring, moving, and always sincere.
