Music was always a first language to me. I learned to read music before I learned how to read words, and even when I was reading music, I was speaking something much more profound: I was speaking my heart. I always said I loved piano because I could communicate in a language that runs much deeper than words. It was a language that wasn’t learned, but developed. I’m lucky that I discovered that voice early on, but it came so naturally to me, as if it was an organic part of who I was meant to be. Growing up I worked passionately to develop that language, desperate to hear my heart speak. Songwriting emerged early when I was a young pianist, but was really cultivated in me when I started guitar a year and a half before high school. Guitar and composition lessons only opened more doors for my voice. The older I got, the more I had to say, and the more ways I found to say it.
I grew in sometimes comfortable and other times uncomfortable and painful ways: spiritually, physically, mentally, socially, intellectually…and it led me to a place where I have an unquenchable passion to share my music. More than that, it gave me something to say, and a purpose. Through several years of refining and challenging experiences, I have found an authenticity within myself—an honesty that’s unashamed to admit brokenness, and a humility that is still yearning to understand grace. As a natural result of what I experienced, my music reached a new level of profundity and my voice became undeniably clearer. My mission is to use my voice to speak truth from my heart that I may ignite in others the light I’ve found, and in some way, impact those who experience my music and listen for the language of my heart in what I’ve experienced.
In gratitude, humility, and purpose, may my voice touch you as you experience my music.
Kaia Nutting is a current student at the University of Colorado Denver, due to graduate in May 2013. Her pop/rock sound hinges between acoustic songbird and pop hits, and encompasses a sea of metaphorical songwriting goodness in between. Growing up south of Denver, she started playing piano at a young age and developed a passion for songwriting early on. With guitar and voice lessons, she found many opportunities to perform and grow as both a person and a profound songwriter. Her EP "Come Running Back" has just been released in November 2012 and she will be showcasing her songs regionally.
