ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Kalio gayo: a different kind of folk music.

Music from various parts of the world inspire Kalio Gayo. Irish and gipsy, or Roma, folkmusic are the most important sources. But you can also hear scandinavian, russian and indian influences. The songs change from lively and fast to ballads that give you goosebumps all over. The music is honest, the voices are clear, resulting in songs that stick to the mind like a pop-song.

Rousing guitar rhythms accompanied by the powerful tunes of the banjo mix well with the harmonies of the voices. The music of Kalio Gayo, although sometimes melancholic, has the power to cheer you up.
The lyrics in english, roma and blabberatsch are about all the important things in life: love, friendship, booze, insecurity, death, and the landscapes where this happens.

Kalio Gayo was formed in 1999 from Jojo MacAspro, “the bubbling solution in hard times”. The music on Fearless, the third and most recent album, has been written by Egbert den Braber and Anja Pleit.

Others about Fearless:

Folkworld.de, Germany:
Simple as it is: sit around the table, tune the instruments and go for it - fearless! Kalio Gayo from Utrecht play music with both Celtic and Gypsy music roots. Mostly original songs, the lyrics written by guitarist Anja Pleit and the music composed by her and banjo player Egbert den Braber. Add some accordion, flute, mandolin, bass, percussion and tender and cordial female vocals. Compared to other bands within the genre, Kalio Gayo is not that highly polished, but they have fun and that is what counts in the end.

New Folksounds, Dutch music magazine:
The uncomplicated music has an Irish sound but through each song seep various European influences that provide a diversity of atmospheres. (...)
All in all a nice album.

Folkroddels.be, Belgium:
Dutch Folkband with sublime singing

Folker, German Worldmusic magazine:
In the booklet you can see how the music of the dutch quintet Kalio Gayo probably is created: sitting together at a richly laid table with accordeon, acoustic bass, banjo and guitar and cheerfully making music. Warm female singing, light Irish influences, a lot of Balkanfolklore.

Kalio Gayo are:
Renske Das: Vocals, Flute, Egbert den Braber: Banjo, Flute and Vocals, Anja Pleit: Guitar and Vocals, Daan Roovers: Accordeon, Joost Bos: Percussion, Sijmen Hendriks: Bass guitar
