Dinah D plays upright bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo, a bit-o-fiddle and really belts it out! She also makes many sound effects and plays kazoo like a mad-woman.
Tina Jones plays trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, tuba, clarinet, piano, and sings her heart out! Yo, she's also known to bust a rhyme about dinosaurs and riding her bicycle. Word.
When they're joined by their friends on stage, you'll see Phil Wipper playing drums, Chad Geekie playing keyboards, Aaron Cadwalader playing guitar and Tracy Myers playing percussion.
It all started when Dinah D and Tina Jones were asked to fill a void in their community of Gabriola Island, BC, Canada: "We need music for our little tykes," they said. In fact, they wouldn't stop demanding it! So, together with the local Recreation Society, they started Melody Makers Musical Preschool. The popularity of this program grew and soon parents of older kids started demanding more hands-on music education for kids of all ages.
This led them to put their heads together, along with several other talented artists from Gabriola to come up with a huge community collaborative extravaganza called "D'Ants in Yer Pants!". With the support from Canada Council's Artists in Community Collaboration Fund, Dinah and Tina led the huge event, with workshopping taking place over several months and involving over 50 of Gabriola's youth, from ages 5 to 17. The show that resulted was a huge success and left the kids with a sense of accomplishment, now having the skills to pull off a GIANT show, complete with Shadow Puppet Show, Live Band and Kid's Choir. From performing on stage to learning stage management skills, the kids created it from conception to concert.
Still, the families on Gabriola and other communities wanted more. Demanded more! More quality entertainment for a family audience! More fun music to share with everyone, no matter what age!
