Album Notes
Keyna Wilkins is a published composer, pianist and flautist based in Sydney. Exploratory, open-minded and globally inspired, her music creates a unique hybrid of sound worlds. Virtuosic improvisation and wide stylistic versatility has led her to perform with many Sydney-based flamenco, jazz, classical and latin ensembles.
Keyna's compositions are published by Australian music publishing house, Wirripang and include a saxophone orchestra piece, Dinner Party, a solo flute piece inspired by a flamenco dance, Buleria Fiero a collection of solo piano pieces Sky Pieces and a 3 part tuba piece Mars. Aspects of jazz, French impressionist, flamenco, experimental music and the influence of contemporary Australian composers can be heard in her works. Her works have been performed around Sydney and UK. Keyna has played in many high profile performances including the opening of the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival at the Convention Centre with Flamenco Australia, (rated 4.5 stars by the Adelaide Advertiser), the sell-out opening of the 2011 Picasso Exhibition at the Art Gallery NSW, and jazz performances on the main arena of the Royal Easter Show 2012 with Martini Rouge jazz quartet. She has performed throughout Europe and Australia. Born in picturesque Somerset, UK, Keyna developed an early passion for music, learning piano at age seven and flute at age ten. Since then she has enjoyed a rich and varied music education spanning UK (Bath Spa University) and Germany (Hildesheim University) and Sydney Conservatorium. She was awarded her MA Flute Performance in 2008 from Bristol University (UK) before emmigrating to Sydney in 2009. She is currently refining her compositional style with the Master of Music Composition course at Sydney Conservatorium under the supervision of Professor Anne Boyd. Keyna has over 10 years of teaching experience including 3 years lecturing in music at Bridgwater College (Somerset, UK), She currently teaches piano, flute and music theory from her home studio in Ashbury. Equally at home playing in bars and concert halls, Keyna is always looking for interesting projects to work on or places to play.
