The Camerons of New York
The 79th New York is one of those legendary early Civil War units that rushed to the colors in the hectic days of 1861. Did they wear kilts at First Bull Run? Could the regiment have had a band, along with pipes, drums and fifes? If it did then it would have been one of the most musically varied units of the Civil War. A group of enthusists have gathered together to make a most interesting CD. An interesting question to ask is did the pipers play with the drums at this time? Even in the Scottish regiments then that question remains somewhat open. The Crimean War is the only documented evidence that shows that this was starting to happen. Did the 79th NY know this? Hard to say. But this CD allows us to imagine the possibility. Music is chosen with care to reflect band and pipes tunes that were contemporary with the Civil War. While the band has a tinny sound with many electronically enhanced sounds to reflect brass of that period, the over all effect is still good. The pipes are set to the correct tonality of a higher pitch for that time. There is one track with shouted orders and regimental drum beats and bugle calls with battle sounds in the background. Very evocative. Another track has a saucy soldier's song of the day. I would tend to agree with the other reviewer here that this is probably one of the most interesting Civil War band music CDs out there. The linear notes are very detailed about the music and contain some great pictures of the 79th NY. Deffinitely worth purchasing even though the CD runs slightly less than 50 minutes.

Solid collection of period music for the Civil war buff
Civil war scholars and those interested in military music of the past have much to enjoy in this new collection. Band music and bagpipes made the 79th New York a unique regiment and this CD captures the zeitgeist of its experience. The CD booklet is also packed with information and archive photographs. There isn't another release like this and it deserves a wide audience.
