Boekbinder is taking time off from her popular band Vermillion Lies, but she clearly has no intentions of taking time off from music. This solo effort contains all the melodic quirk and whip-smart lyricism that have gained her a rabid cult following over the years, but with perhaps even more focus and perspective than she's ever been able to harness. In a time when people seem to be obsessed with singles, Boekbinder fully embraces the album format, crafting tracks that shine on their own, but sound even more gratifying when listened to next to their counterparts. "Stalker" is a light-stomp acoustic song that seems like a lovelorn ode at first, then delves into obsession. Backed with snake-charmer reeds and an utterly transfixing melody, its hypnotic aspects fit the song's subject matter perfectly. And this is precisely where Boekbinder succeeds throughout these 19 songs: her ability to match sounds with feelings is uncanny, and the way in which her voice leads the way is equally impressive. Seems like it should be impossible.
