Daddy Was a Hobo Man

by Kings of the Sun

OK… the thing is with this album, we did not set out to record this album with the same intention as the 1st three. This album, we wanted to record with no commercial pressure what so ever, also, at the time we wanted to record as a 3 piece and live in the studio, this is what your hearing. The band playing live! Jeff’s singing and playing at the same time, it’s magnificent, cause this is what we sounded like on stage!!! Especially when we came back from the States as a 3 piece. This is why I love the album so much. No harmonies, no over dubs, just raw singing & playing, 1st & 2nd takes ONLY… No big production number on this. It can’t really be compared to our other albums, they cost so much money to make. Jeff & I were over the preciousness of it all. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the other albums too, in their full blown glory, but all I can say is, thank Fuck, this one exists in its pure form. That’s why for me “The Hobo Album” rocks, by a Mile!!!

CLIFF HOAD: DRUMS, VOCALS

RECORDED AT TERRY STEVENS STUDIO ONE SOUND EXPLOSION IN THE WINTERSUN OF 1997 and released in 2011

Clifford Hoad founded his band in late 1983 after putting a band together starting with Bob Spencer & then bringing his younger brother Jeff Hoad down to Sydney from Gold Coast to take the role as the singer. The band then included Bob Spencer on guitar , Marlon Holden on bass & Clifford Hoad on drums . Cliff had met Bob Spencer ex skyhooks/Finch in Brisbane during the making of his Drouyn Drumkit ! The band was first called the Young Lions, after some member changes Cliff finally renamed his band KINGS OF THE SUN after seeing the movie KINGS OF THE SUN with Yul Brenner on daytime television one day in Sydney's Tamarama where the band resided . The band then continued with Bob rejoining & a new bass player John McKinnon. Many changes came through to the original lineup including new guitarist recruits Tommy Poulter then Ron Thiesson from the Uncanny Xmen. Clifford's Band finally settled with Glenn Morris on guitar & Anthony Ragg on bass & his younger brother Jeff on vocals & guitar. KINGS OF THE SUN completely disbanded in 1998 after the KISS concert at Carrara showground. Clifford & Jeffrey produced 3 more albums then disbanded again in 2009. Clifford Hoad in 2010 picked up from where he left off now alone forming a New KINGS OF THE SUN band producing a highly anticipated new album in 2013 March featuring himself now as the Lead Singer on the new KOTS album.
