ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
DJ Magazine Review July '04 (**** Star Review)

Kinky Disco consists of saccharin punk vocalist Sharon C and keyboard player Daniel Thompson. Their sound is raw and edgy acid disco punk funk pop. And to date they've released a series of coloured 7" releases, which include the club hit 'Disco Assassinator'.

Their debut LP opens with the Candi Staton and The Source inspired 'Namuka Bay', dips into the more abstract 'Runaway', and delves deeper into acid on 'Reach'n For A Higher Love' .... tracks such as 'Air Guitar', the Daniel sung 'Hanging by a Rope' and 'Disco Assassinator' will stand out in any set. (Ben Osborne)

M8 Magazine, Aug '04 (7/8 Review)

Coming over like electronic Siouxsie and the Banshees, Kinky Disco take the punk element of Felix Da Housecat's 'Devin Dazzle And The Neon Fever' to extremes, their minimal synths and tinny drums battering away over singer Sharon C's raw vocal delivery.

There's much more than a touch of Siouxsie Sioux in her voice, all screeching angst and breathy menace, but that's not the only thing that makes Kinky Disco sound like the Banshees. Daniel Thompson's keys and programming hark back to the earliest electro pioneers - even the cover of 'Pleasures Unknown' references Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures' - sharpened up and given added edge thanks to modern technology.

But Dan's not just plundering the past, he's reinventing it, mixing electro, punk and early 90's house to excellent effect on 'Reach'n' and 'Shake It Up'. Kinky Disco could be electro heroes in the making. M6/M8

Blues & Soul Magazine, July '04 (***** Star Review)

Following the 10" release of "Shake It Up", Daniel Thompson and Sharon C now release their debut album inspired by Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album.

Opening with a stunning synth riff ("sometimes I feel like putting my hands in the air") which explodes into an upbeat electro of "Namuka Bay", the album moves into more electronic territory with the distorted "Run Away," we will run away, just you and I together"

Other highlights include the quirky lyrics of "Free Fall" with the distorted synths and chimes and throwback vocal additions, the melodramatic, moody but musical "Hanging by a Rope," new single "Shake It Up" with its fun lyrics and punk-funk guise and finally the outrageous thrash electro of "Air Guitar." (5/5) MM

UV Magazine, Sept '04
Kinky Disco - Free Fall

While Daniel Thompson keeps the music and keyboards in line it is Sharon's raucous and confrontational live stage manner that may have already caught your eye. Parading the floor like a panther her vocal delivery is an angular unapologetic slap in the face. Nestling somewhere in that rock/dance crossover, Free Fall features an excellent female vocalist who sounds quite like Lola from electro darlings Spektrum. Ones to watch! ( Andy Mac, Skint)

Album Review: EPM - (UK)

Following various multi-coloured 7 inch releases and their first 10 inch release, 'Shake It Up' Kinky Disco now unveil their debut album 'Pleasures Unknown'.

Kinky Disco are Daniel Thompson and Sharon C. Whilst Daniel keeps the music and keyboards in line it is Sharon's raucous vocal delivery and confrontational live stage manner that my have already caught your eye. Parading the floor like a panther her vocal delivery is an angular unapologetic slap in the face. Edgy and aggressive Sharon provides the punk attitude veneer whilst Daniel's bleeps and synths keep the sound infinitely danceable.

Many of you may have already realised the albums reference and look to Joy Division's classic first album 'Unknown Pleasures'. Kinky Disco are certainly not afraid of wearing their influences on their sleeves as you will also notice from opening track 'Namuka Bay' which fuses a well known piano house riff with Sharon's taut lyrics.

Having played their first live gig at The Key, London the duo have been gigging all over the place ever since, building up a loyal following on the back of their previous traffic light coloured 7 inch singles. 'Hanging By A Rope' takes the Kinky Disco sound into a darker and moodier territory, echoing the dark atmospheres of early industrial electronics pierced by a rolling melody that tips its hat off to the likes of OMDs melancholic electronic pop. 'Disco Assassinator' takes a sparse monochrome shape with Sharon's punchy lyrics throwing blows like Siouxsie Sioux sparring with an 808 drum machine whilst recent single 'Shake It Up' has the edgy dynamics of punk-funk wrapped up in early 90s UK warehouse bleeps that has so enamoured Benny Benassi that the 'Satisfaction' million selling maestro will be remixing the single for release later this year. Finally 'Air Guitar' could be the B52s Kate Pierson moshing with Chicks On Speed as raucous keyboard riffs straife over a punked up drum beat.

You could call it sleazed up electro or jacking robo-punk but somehow Kinky Disco seems to fit the band like a leather-studded glove.

Funky and unique!
This cd I like because it is not like all other music playing today. It is more my style and it is funky.
