Album Notes
"Steppin' Out" was Michael's very first CD release. Half the songs were recorded with drums/percussion- featuring three top pro drummers in different styles. You'll hear the widest spectrum of what is possible with this amazing new instrument in the hands of a master player. Songs include jazz, blues, rock, traditional, originals and a few surprises. Featured on the first-ever CD compilation of the world's best Stick players, you'll hear the great novelty tune "Severe Tire Damage" (initially released on Toe Tappin' Records "Tappistry Volume 1"). There's even a killer version of "Stairway To Heaven"! You won't believe it's just one person with one instrument!

One of the instrument's earliest pioneers and one of Emmett Chapman's first students, Michael is a Chapman Stick virtuoso with 38 years experience. Played with both hands using a pianistic technique on a stringed instrument, the Chapman Stick is unique, versatile and probably the most expressive musical instrument ever devised. The result is music that sounds unlike any other instrument.

Devoted to spreading Knowledge of the Chapman Stick, Michael has performed at over a thousand festivals, fairs & corporate events combined. Carlos Santana said his music is "a gift from the heart". He's been an opening act for The Beach Boys and has introduced many to the new instrument including Mick Fleetwood, Herbie Hancock, Keith Emerson, Steve Morse and others.

His albums and music have spread worldwide and he's shared his talents with well over a million people in the last decade. His music has been featured on national radio, television appearances and a short documentary. His musical style encompasses light jazz, classic rock, latin, Hawaiian and other influences. With a catalog of 19 releases he is the most prolific Chapman Stick recording artist to date.

Soothing and exciting - a jazzy blend of cool contemporary.
The best music in any genre comes from musicians who bring it through their whole being. You can feel it ... you know they feel it ... and it takes you somewhere. That's what happens when you listen to Michael K's flow on Steppin' Out. It's a first-class offering of some known covers blended with Kollwitz's original creations. No cookie-cutter, pre-formatted schlock here. It's a rich mix of awesome sounds from an unlikely instrument: the Chapman Stick. Check out the samples for yourself -- this is a must-have CD for anyone who appreciates gourmet smooth jazz. *****

An Absolutely Outstanding Musician
This review is for Michael K as a musician, rather than for a specific album. I am a musician/bandleaer/booking agent myself, and I have known and played with Michael for over 15 years. He is a wonderful talent who plays with an open heart. You can feel his presence when listening to his music, and now that he is living in Hawaii, the beauty and heart come out even more. His musicianship is first class, and when listening to any of his tracks, you know that you are in the presence of someone very special. I highly recommend any of his albums or live performances, and that he plays the Chapman Stick is even more amazing!
