ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
For years family and friends kept suggesting I make a Christmas CD but I thought the songs were too corny so I resisted the idea. Until one day when an old Christmas music book fell out of a closet and literally landed at my feet! I took that as a sign. To my surprise, Christmas songs sounded fantastic on The Chapman Stick and soon I was learning one tune after another. The result is this great Christmas CD with all songs performed completely solo on The Stick: without edits or overdubbing. I'm certain this is one of the world's ONLY Christmas albums performed on The Chapman Stick. Over the last decade, many have told me that they and their families love it every holiday season, year after year. I hope you will too. Ho ho ho!

BIO
One of the instrument's earliest pioneers and one of Emmett Chapman's first students, Michael is a Chapman Stick virtuoso with 38 years experience. Played with both hands using a pianistic technique on a stringed instrument, the Chapman Stick is unique, versatile and probably the most expressive musical instrument ever devised. The result is music that sounds unlike any other instrument.

Devoted to spreading Knowledge of the Chapman Stick, Michael has performed at over a thousand festivals, fairs & corporate events combined. Carlos Santana said his music is "a gift from the heart". He's been an opening act for The Beach Boys and has introduced many to the new instrument including Mick Fleetwood, Herbie Hancock, Keith Emerson, Steve Morse and others.

His albums and music have spread worldwide and he's shared his talents with well over a million people in the last decade. His music has been featured on national radio, television appearances and a short documentary. His musical style encompasses light jazz, classic rock, latin, Hawaiian and other influences. With a catalog of 19 releases he is the most prolific Chapman Stick recording artist to date.

Added much to our Christmas
We enjoyed our visit with you and your wife over the Thanksgiving weekend at Lahaina. So glad we got the Christmas CD which added much to our Christmas. With the holidays over we can new get to know you and the Beatles better.
Thanks to you and your gracious lady.

The most pleasant relaxing music you can imagine
I am excited to see Michael create this Christmas CD. His music is very pleasing and relaxing to listen too. This Christmas CD will provide excellant background music for your holiday events and dinners. I will be giving a handful of these CDs as gifts this year. I have turned several of my musical friends onto Michael and his Stick and they will truly appreciate a gift such as this for their personal enjoyment.

Here’s what happened when Michael Kollwitz’s new CD "Frosty The Stickman"
arrived at my door. I’m not kidding, this is true. I went to the mailbox,
picked up his disc, the weather outside was gloomy and grey. I did a couple
of chores around the house, put his CD on, looked outside not an hour later
and all was wintry white.

I’m not saying that Michael’s CD brought the snow and the first hit of
winter cheer but I’m not ruling out the possibility either.

Michael has assembled all the usual Christmas suspects on this 15 tune
offering: Frosty, Rudolph, the Little Drummer Boy, the Three Kings of
Orient, as well as classics of the holiday repertoire: Silent Night, Away in
a Manger, Auld Lang Syne and others. All played loud and proud – solo Grand
Stick with MIDI sweeteners on the melody side. The arrangements stay pretty
true to the versions sung around open fires and decorated trees everywhere,
making this disc great for holiday gatherings and a good introduction to The
Stick for those who want to know what the instrument sounds like. Yes, you
can play any kind of music on Stick. I like "Frosty The Stickman" best when
Michael stretches out a bit though and adds some smooth blue notes and chord
substations, like on “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “Auld Lang Syne.”

All in all, Michael’s Frosty works great from beginning to end. The holiday
cheer I’m certain he was hoping to get across is there, clear and bright. I
’m looking forward to putting this one on the stereo while I’m opening all
those big boxes with my name on them on Christmas morning. (By the way, if
you’re still searching, I’m a large and I like blue.)

The music is stupendous! It is the kind of music you can use to relax, to wrap gifts, to do art work or crafts, to provide background music at any kind of Christmas gathering, or to get your good mood back- should you lose it somehow- and it is so peaceful. It is innovative yet remains true to the original song. There is nothing like a new set of of popular Christmas songs on such a fantastic instrument as The Chapman Stick. It is different and beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Absolutely unique
Although I have listened to well over 1,000 holiday CDs over the years, I can honestly report that "Frosty The Stickman" is absolutely unique. This is my first (and only!) instrumental Christmas album played on The Chapman Stick...,[which] is a fascinating stringed instrument that is played with both hands by tapping the frets--almost like a blended guitar/piano. When played, it lacks the traditional strumming associated with guitars; instead, the melody floats on a "keyboard" with a bass line beneath. The overall effect is unusual--and pleasing--and this recording gives the impression of several instruments playing together. Artist Michael Kollwitz swears, however, that "[a]ll songs [were] recorded live in-studio to digital format without use of edits or overdubs"--amazing!

"Frosty The Stickman" is a cheery group of 15 holiday gems, all familiar and fun. The tone ranges from the sweetly upbeat ("Frosty The Snowman") to the gently contemplative ("We Three Kings of Orient Are"), and the arrangements are relatively straight-ahead, with a few creative curves adding excitement to the ride. The best tracks include "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," with its jazzy interludes, and a slyly spirited "Sleigh Ride."

This music would provide the perfect backdrop for your holiday social gathering or gift-wrapping fest. If you're looking for a broad range of lovely holiday instrumentals, get on the stick--The Chapman Stick--with Michael Kollwitz.

Rock never sounded so classical
I have heard Mr. Kollwitz perform at various venues throughout Sacramento and he never ceases to amaze me. His mastery of this unique "stick" is incredible. Fine, distinct harmonies unlike anything I've ever heard.
