kOOlinger - "Ain't It Funky Now"
This very groovy band around drummer Andi Weiss plays real cool funky stuff, as the group name indicates. Austrian masters of groove-Jazz, like Christian Havel and Thomas Kugi are featured, completed by the strong rhythm of Erwin Schmidt(organ), Herfried Knapp(b) and Anton Mühlhofer(perc). A mix of big/well known songs and some special ones are brought in the fine, reduced sound of the band! (recorded live!)Thomas Kugi . sax

Christian Havel . guitar
Erwin Schmidt . hammond B3
Herfried Knapp . bass
Anton Mühlhofer . percussion
Andi „Miami“ Weiss . drums

Since years the bandname Koolinger in
Vienna is another word for cool groovy
Jazz. These six exceptionnal musicians on
saxophone, guitar, bass, drums, percussion
and Hammond organ are each masters at
their trade - they proved this at the Vienna
Jazzfest and several other international
Mastermind Andi Weiss got a very lucky
hand in selecting the musicians over the
years, the line-up changed slightly several
times, the quality stayed. Also his choice
of songs, as well as the arranging play an
essential role! His drum playing is pushing,
but relaxed at the same time and together
with the precise bass of Herfried Knapp and
the steady percussion of Toni Mühlhofer, it is
the basis for a sweeping beat.
The rest is done by the “melodic” collegues:
they all appear as soloists, but also pull
back again all the time, to serve the whole,
to serve the “Groove”, which is extremely
important in cool Funk music.
Thomas Kugi, ein phenomena on Tenorsax;
Christian Havel, a big guitar personality in
Jazz und Funk; Erwin Schmidt, a wonderful
painter of sounds on his Hammond.
These special tracks are from a very fine live
recording at the Vienna Jazzland.
Again we have to notice: “live” this kind of
music just comes best!

Seit Jahren ist Koolinger ein Wiener
Synonym für coolen groovy Jazz. Die
sechs Ausnahmemusiker an Saxophon,
Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug, Percussion und
Hammond Orgel beherrschen perfekt ihr
Handwerk - das haben sie unter anderem
beim Wiener Jazzfest und internationalen
Festivals bewiesen. Mastermind Andi Weiss
hatte über die Jahre eine sehr gute Hand in
der Auswahl der Musiker für die doch einige
Male leicht geänderte Besetzung. Auch seine
Songauswahl inklusive Arrangements spielen
eine wesentliche Rolle!
Sein Schlagzeugspiel ist dringlich, aber
relaxed gleichzeitig und zusammen mit dem
präzisen Bass von Herfried Knapp und der
steady Percussion von Toni Mühlhofer bildet
das die Basis für einen mitreißenden Beat.
Der Rest erledigen die “melodischen”
Kollegen: alle als Solisten in Erscheinung
tretend, aber sich auch immer wieder
total zurücknehmend, dem “Ganzen”, der
“Groove” dienend, was ja so extrem wichtig
ist für coole Funkmusik.
Thomas Kugi, ein Phänomen am Tenorsax;
Christian Havel, eine große Persönlichkeit auf
der Jazz- und Funkgitarre; Erwin Schmidt,
ein herrlicher Klangmaler auf der Hammond
Die vorliegende Aufnahme ist ein sehr
gelungener Live-Mittschnitt vom Wiener
Jazzland. Man kann es immer wieder
feststellen: Live kommt diese Musik doch
wirklich am besten ‘rüber!
